Other than that, the self-righteousness of this article is amusing.  Take a look at the advertising history of this web site.  Remember the Evony ads?  The AoC ads?  The recent RIFT ads?

There's currently an ad on this site for Granado Espada, featuring a woman with very large breasts, that fades in along with the caption "Explore Adventures of EPIC proportions."

Or the Sevencore ad featuring a very curvy women bent over, back arched, etc.

Or the large-breasted woman in the Neverwinter ad.

Sex sells.  Ads and games are designed to appeal to certain demographics.  If it doesn't appeal to someone, don't play it, or don't buy it.  It's arrogant to think that everything must be designed to appeal to "me", or it's evil.

This is as close to a tabloid "news" site as you'll find in the gaming industry. Don't expect them to have standards or think hypocrocy is wrong. Hell they used to talk about supporting the health of the mmo indsutry while running gold selling and power lvling web ads.

Ever notice how these "news" articals seem to show up after a few rather long and heated threads get going on their forums. Then all of those threads start getting locked directing everyone into these ones.  That's not keeping up with what's current in the industry, it's Jerry Springer day time TV.

I do agree with you 100% Bill. But I do feel compelled to give them a point or 2 for honesty (bringing their total score up to negative 13.)

What honesty you say? They are advertising and delivering what many other Eastern MMOs (I'm loking at you Tera) simply try to sneak in to the genre with a nudge and a wink... I dislike that even more than this blatant sexploitation.

I still dont see what the problem with this game is. If you dont like it, dont play it. It just seems some people are trying to force their morals and beliefs upon others which in my eyes is oppression, plain and simple.

Maybe others are talking about morals. I'm not. This is just cheap money for sex disguised as an MMO. It cheapens the genre.

A market for porn--cartoon or not--exists and forms a huge portion of internet traffic. I don't think Bill is concerned with putting an end to that like some oppressive religious zealots are. What I dislike about this game is the sale of cartoon nudity as an MMO poluting the MMO genre.

I think your libertarian objections are simplistic and misguided.

Of course sex sells, its in our DNA. To try to curb that is to go against our bery nature. What needs to be done is people need to be educated so they can make an informed decision about such things on their own.

Bill... this is an incredibly naughty thread. >.> Feeding trolls with virgins is not the way to go - well, unless you want to up the sites clickablity and I don't blame yah.  I bet you are entertained reading this thread, i know from experience baiting puts in a good mood!

I agree the game is in an incredibly bad taste but I am also laughing a little bit about it. What would make me laugh the most - Scarlet Blade actually being a good game.

Good show Bill, enjoyed the column .. the rest of you lighten up.

Hah.. sorry. Why exactly do you assume that in Asia young men are any different or smarter? The basic principle behind the anime this originates from is "sex sells".  Your point is quite moot i am afraid.

You know I have to agree with that point. If you're going to be ok with massive ammounts of gore and death then the polar opposite shouldn't be an issue. However I will add that I think it'd be only fair to have some nearly naked male characters in the game for lady gamers to play.

Then again I guess more people are ok with murder, slaughter, and genocide then they are with sexuality, but hey that makes for a healthy society dosn't it?

Bah whatever.  I'm female and this game is hilarious.  This game can't do anything to me that I haven't already done on IMVU.

considering how much sex sells we have in gaming in general for this game to have gotten so much negative attention for doing basically the same thing most games do but WAY WAY  more seems a tad silly, but hey keep it up no publicity is bad publicity. The real question is .....is the game any good well i am gonna guess no.

Actually my point's not moot, people are over reacting to an art style on a game that's based on another cultures ideals of what's acceptable( re: Not Taboo ). Did the owners of this particular rehash bank on "Sex sells" well that's pretty obvious but they certainly didn't have to go out of their way now did they.

All that's besides the point, which was ... people are taking this way to seriously; apparently including you.

    Thank you come again?

Thank you Bill Murphy and MMORPG.com for giving this game the puplicity and attention it deserves.

This game seems like such a joke. I can't understand how ANYONE would ever want to play or throw money at this game in any way.

But whatever, to each their own. I supposed it's aimed at the type of people who would, say, roll an Elin in Tera.

I definitely agree with it being a step backwards for the genre, however.

I log in this morning and there are like a half dozen ads for this game with scantilly clad animes that look about 12 years old......I just don't get the obsession some people have with anime.....When I see advertising liek that I know the game sucks without even playing it.....If they have to use sex to sell then it is bad.

I played the closed beta this weekend.  The T&A was great at first, but I got so into the story that I almost forgot I was playing a female character.  I wanted to get to the next quest so I could read more of the story.

This is the first MMO since Tabula Rasa that made me want to read the quests.

Can't wait for OB and realease.  This is gonna be my MMO for a good while.

The downside is that the mechanics still need work - I was a little confused as to the GCD since it seemed as though my skills would not go off when I hit them, even though they weren't on cooldown.  The mobs just seem to be placed in spots waiting to be killed by players.  It was a litle disappointing.  But, as this was CB, they have time to fix things.

I think all you haters out there are gonna be dissapointed that this "joke" of an F2P MMO is going to make a pretty big splash.  Sure, the social aspects may suffer a bit in this game due to its very nature, but I think it will do fine.  Wait for the real reviews.  The reviewers will be shocked and amazed at how great the story is, and will most likely say the same thing I just did - "I actually read the quests!"

Also, the only unethicality in this game is the lack of men. And thats actually insult towards men, more than women.

So it's a step back for gaming and women's rights, while pushing the boundries of sex in gaming. I feel like that's a good thing. Show us where the line is, Scarlet Blade - if your game fails, it's an example for the rest of the world.

However - it's clearly causing quite a commotion among the community, it's got a pretty intense marketing campaign going on, and ya know what else? It's not taking itself too seriously!

Asian MMO imports are notorious for garbage storylines and generic content - this game embraces that and takes a new angle. Yes, we all know it's shameless. I wouldn't be surprised if there ends up being a completely unbalanced pay2win cash shop in it, too - but at the end of the day, the company is trying to make money. And judging by this game's bulging popularity, I think they'll do just that.

At least for a little while, so long as they continue to update the game with bigger, bustier characters and NPCs.

Also, well written. I was amused.

    :D

It isn't that great, neither are the models.  I thought the idea of starting naked and forcing you to play the game to cover yourself up was quite amusing though.  It certainly wasn't the "riveting" plot that saw me endure twenty minutes of gameplay to earn a pair of shoes.  I was actually curious if they had deliberately structured the first quest rewards to keep as much digital flesh on display as possible for as long as possible.

I was not surprised to find that they had.  I'm sure it'll meet the same fate as most Aeria games.

this game is pretty decent if you can look over the sexualisation of it. it's actually pretty fun, also this game was totally made for those who know what it really is and that is queens blade online (queens blade is a VN/anime series) the story is pretty good if you pay attention to it, the PVP is quite fun and frantic, but very laggy as of right now. and to be honest i never play as male characters in MMORPG's anyway, not because i am perverted or anthing but because i am tired of always playing as steroid using macho men.  anyways give it a try you might be surprised that you enjoy it.
  • RemianenRemianen Member UncommonPosts: 38

Bill, I'm curious about something. Where is this outrage coming from? You don't honestly think this is the first game to make its female models cheesecake. The difference is, they're not trying to hide it or gloss over it. Where is your outrage over the idle animation of the Night Elf female in WoW (as one example)?

As others have said, the game has a lot going for it. The whole 'naked female model' thing is just a ploy to get people to try it, being Asian MMO port #9175841474. The story is good and, being an M 17 title, the NPCs speak like real people in stressful situations would (i.e. salty language) which is a huge small detail for me. Last time I remember an M rated MMO title, it was solely for blood and gore (AoC) and the language used, even in the most life threatening of situations, was the Queen's English (which isn't realistic AT ALL).

In the words of one Eric Bischoff, controversy creates cash. Go ask Elvis Presley, NWA, 2Pac,  Body Count, Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails, RockStar Games, Eminem, Eli Roth (Hostel), and so on and so on and so on. Ask the producers of Married....With Children how much they love Terry Rakolta. Judging by the number of outraged gaming journalists, Aeria's marketing department hit a home run here.

Literally, people who have a girlfriend, would not find this game appealing at all. Pretty sad, but oh well.
