    Yeah, when I saw a game designer talking about 'the marketing beta' for their game, this highlighted the problem with terminology.   The same word is being used to refer to a bunch of different things.

     

    One beta is there to find problems.   The other is there to generate interest.  Etc.   Knowing which type you are in definitely helps.

     

    I have been in Betas where nothing changed to the live release.  In others, massive changes happened.  Some good, some bad.

    If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

    Guild Wars 2 where 100%(first press beta's) for promoting game and not realy to test.

    Many of major bugs snd specially exploits or faulty gameplay still not solved after game was launched.

    This was all due to way to short testing by mass and stress tests where a joke result huge problems still excist in live game.

    Was nice playing so called beta weekends but they where justa showcase and very limited to sell the game nothing more.
