Dragons are overdone. What unique creatures would you use as the "main villain"?

Protectors.  But Niven says it's very difficult to write something that's much smarter than human.

Alternatively, a '68 Charger.  (What? They're the Bad Guy's car in just about every American car movie.)

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

    Good luck selling that game.

People crave conflict & bloodshed, it's what we are. We can rise above it due to the power of reason, but can never shake it completely.

Besides, your idea usually sounds good in theory, but turns out to be mindnumbingly boring in practice.

    fine then..how about REPUBLICANS

And the politically correct behavior programming claims yet another soul in its goal of polarizing the masses with delusions of intellectual moral superiority while systematically enslaving them through the lie of entitlement and the lure of effortless rewards.  Every time you give into this demogogary, you trade your freedom of thought for being one of a enslaved masses.

TO address the point of the thread:

The mythos of HP Lovecraft, they are monsterous in size, utterly alien in thought, have legions of bizzaro servants, powerful mojo, cultists and the worst part is, fighting them costs you your sanity.

Married men in some parts of the country refer to the above as "The Wife's Family".

Another poster mentioned Mind Flayers ala AD&D, to which I quite agree, they're also really good.  In fact, instead of a solitary 'boss', a rival faction with leaders with a agenda of conquest through either subtle or gross means makes for a great villian.  It is after all, the stuff of our own history.

Even peace may be purchased at too high a price, and the only time you are completely safe is when you lie in the grave.

    Uber powerful mages.

No horns, spikes, or gimmicks, just an insanely powerful magic user. Balrog level summons, manipulating time, controlling weather, etc.
