Been playing beta and Dimensions are amazing. I spend 8+ hours building a swamp hideaway that featues, guest beds, a library, a real bartender, and a Shrine to the vigil since im guardian. Ill be uploading a vid later on what I made and mine not even impressive. Some things people have done is nuts in comparison.

My biggest gripes with Themepark raid centric games is that theres little to do when you are not raiding. Well Rift gives me something to do with dimensions. Plus when Guild Dimensions go up for testing its gonna be even better. People are getting very creative, one tester made a jumping puzzle with prizes being awarded to people who complete it. While yes it is instanced it has alot more freedom then Lotros housing. Me and my guild have already decided to make guild nights evolve around it with stuff like who can make the most bizarre, unique, and awesome dimension. We will also use it as a meeting place before events.

Playing: FFXIV, DnL, and World of Warships
    Waiting on: Ashes of Creation

Its a much needed step towards player made content. The size of these dimensions allow for custom platforming type game mechanics which is sweet. I bet soon enough we will be able to straight up make our own scripted events and encounters that people can enter and try to complete. Maybe some speed run rankings and leaderboards. The possibilities are all there. Trion set the groundwork for some serious longevity here.

Would you prefer the game remain all about the same exact things for its entire existence, and that nothing new is ever introduced?

I think this is the first time I've seen someone seriously complaining about a company giving players more to do in their game/world. Identity crisis? No. It's called "options"; "more stuff to do".

MMORPGs as a genre has always been about growing and expanding and offering players more things to do within the game/world. A MMO that doesn't do this stagnates and becomes old and dull.

"I'm not sure trying to be all things to all people is going to work. "

Who says they're trying to be all things to all people? I mean, maybe for you a MMO is better when it's only focused on a few specific things, and never expands or changes. A MMO can be "all things to one person". More stuff to do is more stuff to do. I'm pretty sure if you asked most players in any given MMO, they'd prefer more options... not fewer.

The time spend broadening the focus of the game means less time adding content to the original core of the game.

    Seriously?

Have you even bothered to look at what the new expansion is bringing to the game? For starters, tripling the size of the world with 2 entire new continents? Adding new Souls to the game? A ton of new "core" content like quests, dungeons, raids, etc?

And for players that feel there is no point (remember that should end with "to or for  you"), you need to see this:

These are from EQ2, some players relly want and like housing, and for players that put this much in to a house to make it a home (imo) instanced is best (no one wants to return to a MMO if you know that the home you put loving care into will be gone and all of thier items will be creatted up (no one wants to have to do the layout again, if they even can fine a new home, in non-instanced housing MMO)

The pics are from: Nefaria Darksoul, she did Custom Home Designs, and (most likly) not for free.

For EQ2 it helped creat/stabilize a player driven economy.

So if you are still saying "whats the point?" the anwser is "Becouse players want it !" and no one ever said: "If this MMORPG ever gets player housing, I'm never going to play again!".

Enjoy it if you want, and if you do not want to use it, well don't, but don't gripe about it being there, in any form.

/drop mic, and walks of stage

First of all, UO was not a PvP game in a sense of Darkfall Online. UO had a great pvp system, yeah, but there was so much more to do, that it would be unfair to reduce it to the term "pvp game".

Second: No one could mess with your house while you were gone. When returning after a break, it would look exactly the same way, as you left it (provided you didn't cancel the sub; if I remember correctly there was a 3-month timer before it went IDOC; so most players resubbed at least every three months).

Well I admit, a instanced housing system is always better than no housing system at all. And I also willingly admit, that there seem to be players, which consider THAT a good housing system. Mainly, I think, because they never experienced a non instanced version.

However, you say "because players want it". I can not confirm this. To me it seems, the majority wants a housing system in common areas. Not only in this forum (they are all hardcore MMO nerds anyways), I see this a lot in LotRO forums too. There are dozens of threads to give the housing system some meaning. And most players I know don't "use" their houses at all. Even kinship houses aren't used frequently.

Lastly, I would like to say that I do not want to spoil this for you! If it sounded that way, I apologize! I am happy for you, I simply wished they would implement a "real" housing system. After Aion that would have been another AAA-game that would have gone down that road.

Please re-read what I posted, I never compaired UO to Darkfall, I only called it a PvP MMO, if you can kill a player that does not want the fight, then yes it is a PvP MMO (really theres not much more to being a PvP MMO).

So once again please read the post you respond to, that way you will look like you know what you are saying,

And knowing is hafe the battle! image

The variety that is going to be possible in personal dimensions is amazing.  It will not only give me something to mess around with when I am not in the mood to quest or PVP, but will add a boost to the economy via player-made building materials.  The common negative thread around player housing is that it doesn't add much "content" to the game, but in my opinion it gives players one more thing to do and adds a special feeling of home within the game.  If that helps keep players around longer, then it is a worthy investment of time by a dev.  Go Trion!

They actually reminded me of Neverwinter Nights 2.  One of the first places you go through is a swamp that looks sort of similar.
