Not played darkfall, but I find this attitude works in eve.

Think of it as gambling every time you go out.

    Weigh up your potential gains
Add in other factors like where you are going and who you are going with
Take into account other losses if you fail (like city siege example above)

Then think of the gear you take with you as your stake.

    This is very good too.

After playing for awhile youll start to figure out sort of a method of judging what to take with you based on toughness of what youre going to be fighting vs rewards. If youre just going after weak mobs for skilling up but with low gold / material gains, then sure you dont really want to take out your best gear. Youre just breaking it anyway while skilling up.

On the other hand if youre going to farm a dungeon with fairly tough mobs, but great profit if youre able to farm for awhile, youll likely want to take some better gear to increase your ability to farm easily. Also consider the fact that such dungeons also tend to be PvP hotspots, then decide what youre willing to risk losing. Is it worth taking your R80 sword with Q5 enchantments and possibly losing it, or could you still farm effectively with a fairly easy to get R50 sword?

Youve also got to consider the surrounding areas. If youre going to farm in a dungeon / area near holding owned by a clan that is known to grief everyone they can, or a clan youre at war with, then the risk gets much much higher. But if youre living out of and farming near a holding owned by your own clan, or an allied / neutral clan that does a good job of protecting the area and scaring off enemies, your risk is much lower.

It works kind of like high sec & low sec in EVE. Except instead of being policed by NPCs, it is policed by players, and it also changes for each player based ont heir own race / alignment / clan. For a human in a peaceful clan working out of human/elf/dwarf towns or allied holdings, its like being in med to high sec. You might get attacked at some point, but much lower chances and if you do there will usually be allies to take out the enemy and get your stuff back. But going off to farm in enemy lands (alfar / mahirim / orc) or near griefers / war-like clans is being in null - low sec. Your chances of getting protection and getting any of your stuff back are very very low.
