Guild Wars 2 is nothing like Skyrim whatsoever. Skyrim is an awesome open world sandbox RPG, and Guild Wars 2 is a themepark MMO with a lot of pvp and a lot of world events that you zerg for XP and items. GW2 is basically Rift and Warhammer Online combined together with much better graphics and a much more polished game engine.
Exactly how is Skyrim so much of a sanbox?
I mean Minecraft is a real sandbox where you build everything yourself and people have always said the same thing of the elder scrolls game but there is not really much player created content in the game.
Sure, you can ignore the story and just explore and do anything the game allows you instead but you can frankly do most of that in GW2 as well.
No, the word "Sandbox" have been used far too much, Skyrin is if anything a hybrid. True sandboxes let you create your own content.
Edit: I am not saying the games are alike though, they arent.
You are aware that Skyrim mods are huge on PC right? You know, the ability for people to create their own content within Skyrim? Oh... you only play on console? Shame..
So, Skyrim, by your definition is a true sandbox. At least on PC.

The feeling of being in a large scale epic land turmoiled by evil around every corner, offering something exciting to see at every turn ... felt very much like Skyrim to me... even visually.
Until you stop looking at screenshots and actually play the game. Then you realize that they are nothing alike.

GW2 does not get their toes where Skyrim has it heels.
And Skyrim doesn't have its toes where Vanguard has its thighs.
And none of these have anything where UO has it's...

Way to insert foot into mouth there bud.
LOL. But, if we want to get techinical, Daggerfall was the most sandbox elderscrolls game out. There was a story line, but your actions affected the ending. I can see where the person you quoted is coming from.
I can see two similarities that GW 2 has with Skyrim.
1. Both games have a beautiful worldspace that encourages you to explore all the nooks and crannies.
2. Thanks to branching personal storylines and random events, both games offer each player a somewhat different play experience. What do I mean by that? When I talk with my friends about RPGs like Dragon Age or Mass Effect, we all experience basically the same main content. However, when we talk about Skyrim, they sometimes find some weird quest in the middle of nowhere that I didn't experience. Likewise, my experience as a shapeshifting warrior is very different from my buddy's experience as a stealthy assassin working for the brotherhood.
I feel GW 2 is the same way. My experiences playing a human necromancer are almost 180 to my experiences playing a Charr guardian. There are also a lot of world events that you may not see on the first playthrough. I compare this wih say WOW where after the starting area almost everyone has about the same experiences, or say SWTOR where everyone playing the same class have the same choices.
Guild Wars 2 is nothing close to an "Online Skyrim," for better or for worse. It's not open world, for one, and it's not first person. There isn't a whole lot of exploration either, although quite a few fanbois here will probably pop in and try and convince you otherwise. There are certainly places to run around to, but the maps just aren't that big.
Also, it can get distracting sometimes, when you do try and explore, because you cant run 20 feet without having some event pop up on your screen telling you to go somewhere and help out. You can ignore it, but it's so frequent that it gets distracting, at least for me.
As for guilds, I'd say that there is very little in this game that requires a guild. Much less so than most MMO's. There are no end game raids, which are the main reasons for mmo guilds. If you want to get into competetive PvP, having a guild of like-minded players would probably be good, just for the sake of getting used to working as a team with them.
In general, I'd say that this game is very "loner" friendly in some ways, in that there are so many people running around with you that you don't have to formally start groups up. You just kill whatever, with everyone else. At the same time, due to the smaller zone sizes and rather dense player population, it's hard to actually find places where you can truly get "lost" in exploration because there will be dozens of people around you do the same thing.
Yup and here I am. Not sure what game you were playing but there's plenty to explore in this game. The 'maps' aren't super massive omg cover 100000000 kilometers, but the world itself is HUGE and engrossing. Every area just has some sort of flavor to it or puts you in a place where you're constantly beside yourself with curiousity. There's plenty to explore...
Though quite a few HATERS here will probably pop in and try to convince you otherwise.
I'm finding just as much or more things to explore in GW2 than Skyrim, and I've already logged more hours in it. Skyrim's a good game, but I don't know why the two are being compared.

i will take that and will add that cause there is a lot of PvP, there you will need a guild, or if you wanna get gear from dungeons and you will need to grind them, then again you will need a company doing them repetitive ... ^^

Of that, I have no doubt. (that fact is pointed out to me rather frequently, as of late)

You will get more out of pvp if you are in a guild though, but that applies to EVERY mmo.
