unforuntunately for the great unwashed there is no hiding behind gear grinding here. you have to turn up and compete on an even footing.

If you want progression, Tournaments, ranks and cosmetics are available in structured and PVP specific gear as well as Server rankings are available in WvW.

My job and career is where I progress.

Video games is where I go to chill out and have fun with friends.

By that, is the OP talking about gear grinding and raiding? Cause if so I say good riddance...

Not everyone is sold on cosmetics. This diesn't mean GW2 is a bad game, but for those who do not view cosmetics as a form of progression, there're questions about will GW2 be able to keep their attention.

I think he is reffering to the impacts of Structured PVP and WvW 80 boost and normalized end game gear over specialist arena and pvp gear whilst also criticising normalisation of gear rarities in pve.

One thing people commonly get wrong is that all 80 gear is of the same power when its actually the case that gear of the same rarity is of the same power but the differenence in rarirty isn't that big.

And that is exactly why several of us are looking forward to the game, actually. No more PvP or battlegrounds where no matter how good you play you can't possibly win against this other guy because he has more time/started playing earlier than you did and he grinded his +1000 PVPstat set of gear while you're still in starter gear.

It's not for everyone, though, so if it's not your cup of tea, there are already lots of other games that do offer a gear grind, if that's what you're looking for.

What can men do against such reckless hate?

PvP progression? Can anyone explain why anybody would want PvP progression (ie gear based PvP)?

And the reason a very large amount of people are liking the way GW2 mechanics work, is because there is no hamster wheel like in most all previous games released within the last year, if not 7.

If you need a shiny on a stick in front of you for that drive to play a video game, there truely are plenty of different games. I'm not trying to be rude but it's kind  of bogus how it starts out everyone bitches about all the new games, "oh me gawd it's the same ole same ole gear grind".

And now that we don't have one, people are all like, "Oh me gawd, what ever shall I do!".

I got one for ya, play. the. game.

he who needs gear to win from his oponents are weak minded simpletons, dont hide behind gear.
Grab your balls play hard and desimate your oponent, when you win you can /bow and say iam better then you.

Crawl back to Aion / WoW and join them for the carrot on a stick design we have seen almost 2 decades now.

Dont buy GW2 either, you need skills to compete, think on your feet, make tactical decisions dodge their hardest nukes.
All shit is balanced around skills, not gear.

There are so many gear grinding mmo's out there, even games where you can PAY to get UBER gear.
    GW2 aint like that.

Give me a fun and enjoyable game with cosmetic rewards over carrot on a stick style any day

Brings me back to the days of UO - the only MMO I have ever played that doesn't care about gear and stat progression.

Sure, you had stats in UO but they were easy to max as were skills (most) and there was no gear progression (again for the most part.)

    Win/Win for GW2.

There are countless mmos with progression systems in place were you can be the most powerfull with the best gear. Its about time we get something different to the norm and have it be in a big scale. This might turn a few mmos though, look at what Rift is doing.

Well, you do events and help out in the world and you gain experience, thus leveling and unlocking traits, slots, and other things, I call this progression. Doing certain events whether failed or not leads to other events based on that success or not, doing these events give you money, experience, and karma points( the currency used to aquire gear ), all these things are used to further your character in whatever way you choose, I call this progression. The storyline definitly progresses from large scale to larger scale dragon fighting.

Theres sPvP which will have rankings and eventually tournys, WvWvW progresses your server with bonus' for winning, server morale, not to mention the exp, money, and karma you gain for taking part.

Alot just level in the WvWvW and you can still aquire whatever gear you want with your karma points because this system allows for completly open progression in the way you want.

I may have left some stuff out but to me this all looks like progression, not the kinda most are used to but its time for a change.

Mess with the best, Die like the rest

I believe it has to do with being able to gain advantage in pvp combat, but not having to rely on skill to do it...i.e. I have stronger gear, making my character stronger...hence, I don't need a strategy to actually win in pvp combat.

It's for those without skill and those who enjoy one shoting people and calling them noobs because they havnt wasted as much time of their lives grinding up their pvp gear.

I want this to apply in RL. Fresh troops arrive in Iraq or whereever - Given a plastic knife.

Captain says: "Tomorrow you might get a metal knife and about a month from now we might give you a projectile weapon"

Some Commando who has been there a few years drive past in a Tank: "Just got this Tank for competing in this war for 2 years!"

EDIT: Forgot to add that we would be screwed because those iraq's or whoever we are fighting...they have been there their entire lives...they got future mechs n ****

If you continue to make sweeping statements like you know what everyone everywhere thinks about a certain topic then I am going to shout at you.
It easy to type 'I think this is the worst game ever'
Rather than the 'This is the worst game ever'

I don't think there's any question at really, if someone isn't interested in cosmetic progression GW 2 won't be their game for very long.

You see I have never once died and said "He must have better gear than me" I've always felt that way of thinking was a cop out. I felt the same way when people used to say in WoW "if we had arena weapons the field will be leveled" WoW gave them the gear. Hear me now WoW gave them the gear. They didn't have to earn it through progession in skill, it was gifted to them. They were happy though. The gear is all they really wanted. They didn't care about a level playing field. The gear was always there for them. They just had to get better. Guess what? When those players who used gear as an excuse got the gear. Those players were still bad.

    I embrace the challenge.

Well this is actually what some are looking forward to. Depends on the gamer. I like it myself. Besides there are plenty of other games out there if you want gear to be the overriding factor in PvP.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

I guess there is also a very niche crowd aside from those who want gear to beat on people just because they have spent more time in the game and those who want an equal footing. This other niche crowd(which bcbully seems to be a part of) is the ones who like the "challenge" in going up against folks with better gear than them. Sounds kind of not really challenging, but ok.

Not overriding factor, but a motivational factor to learn and progress as pvpr. GW2 has a carrot never mistake that, That cosmetic carrot may not be as fulfilling to some though.

If my garden hoe is as effective as your flaming sword of brilliance, I would probably look at you like you over paid for that thing.

I think you are overlooking the fact that many, like me(and probably most who play games like LoL). Will not really "look foward" to getting a new cosmetic weapon. Its more about the stats and the experience. To look at your stats and notice you are doing better, be part of a guild and play in tourneys. Basically have fun.

issue is most gear dependent pvp you only have a chance against people pretty close to your gear tier... For instance in Rift when it had 8 ranks a rank 4 had no chance on a rank 8 one on one many times my rank 8 could take on 4 or 5 low rankers at a time... Not a whole lot of challenge in that...
