Would you play a 100% Ad Supported MMO

maskedweaselmaskedweasel Member LegendaryPosts: 12,173

Instead of F2P,  or B2P or Subscriptions,  would you be willing to play a game where it is 100% ad supported.  Ads are everywhere in game (by everywhere I mean tastefully,  like coke cans,  audio advertising when you walk past a certain NPC... etc.)    , and perhaps at specific intervals of gameplay they would pop up an ad that you had to click through.

I know some mobile games have things similar to this,  but they still utilize a cash shop,  and they are still widely popular....  but what about for PC MMOs.    Consoles?

It would be easy to implement into a game like the secret world. Just have some billboards in towns with Real company logos on it and there you go, ingame advertising.

I could put up with that type of advertising. But if it halts my game i would not play it.

Yes, but I would only do so if the ads fit with the setting. That basically limits the settings to like an alternative modern history/reality Earth (TSW for example), or a post-apocalyptic Earth setting in which the apocalypse happened +/- 30 years from present.

For me, fantasy games are a rare refuge from the from constant barrage of advertising that exists in most entertainment.  So, never say never, but even at a price of "free" I would probably decline.

Nope! I hate forced marketing as it is in this country. It already has gone to far and if it was in a MMO I would never touch that game.

  • CorehavenCorehaven Member UncommonPosts: 1,533

    I.....guess so.

If it had stuff poping up on the screen though that would ruin it entirely.  It would be incredibly frustrating.  However most of those games have loading screens so if they did that instead, and just whacked them onto the loading screens I guess that could be okay.

Of course with so many fantasy mmos I dont see how the heck you would realistically put modern day advertisement or items in the game world itself.  So I guess it could work for most other things besides something in a fantasy setting.

But yea, no pop ups.  That would make it not worth it.  So to answer, if it didnt have pop ups and instead just used loading screens for that stuff then I might play it.  If it had pop ups while I was trying to play then heck no.  No way.

I have a feeling this type of game would lead to popups, commercial waiting games, adds all over the screen, etc etc that would completely turn me off.  I mean if a game completely ran off non-emersive marketing (like the billboard ideas) I'd be fine with it, I just don't see that happening.

Adds wouldn't stop me from trying a game. If there were popups that had to be dismissed or even worse uninteruptible (aka youtube) videos, that would turn me off. A little banner at the bottom of the map or prominently displayed bilboards wouldn't really bother me. How the MMO designer would benefit from a banner if it didn't take you out of game to their website I can't see.

I like AO's Old Spice commericals on screens and billboards... when they worked right. A couple of times the trademark whistle would follow me everywhere I went.

This only works in contemporary or sci-fi settings, though.

if i remember correctly, when blizzard merged with activision, they came up with the idea of removing the sub and instead put ads in major cities like ironforge, stormwind, orgrimmar etc.  the ads wud change after a limited time and players then wud hav to downlaod new ads in game for viewing. players swiftly declined this idea and as of now the sub is still in wow. i dont' think i will go for ads supported games, if i hav to downlaod ads in the middle of pvp or raid, imagine the horror.

No. I play to escape the real world.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Probably not, especially with regards to the random ads at intervals idea.

Anarchy Online used this method quite a bit in the past....Most of the time it asn't too bad until they had previews for one of WIll Ferrells movies.......You guys are right though it sure wouldnt work for a fantasy MMO.

    Interesting...

I just play to waste time.

~Also, I would put up with an annoying pop-up type if they really made it a genuinely funny experience.

"would you like to try the fresh taste of new Coke Zero?" ~no

    "are you sure?" ~no

"we won't take 'no' for an answer" ~Goddamn it! NO!

"try some anyway! Mwahahahah!" (at this point your character is pelted with coke cans, and it's well worth it)

id play a game where the devs came over and punched me in the face every day if the game was more than 4% group content and didn't throw candy at anyone who managed to press the 1 key a few times.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

If it does not ruin game atmosphere and are logic (or may be even funny) - positive. Example: if I am in a post-apocalyptic MMORPG's weapon shop, there may be ad: "If you throw Mynton into any bubble-drink, you get explosives. Why waste game money - get your explosive Mynton righ now!" .

(by everywhere I mean tastefully,  like coke cans,

    positive

audio advertising when you walk past a certain NPC.

negative. Reason: NPCs are for some fun or useful info. If I walk near NPC and it repeats "Buy Mynton, it's freshness" - I would turn off sound.

and perhaps at specific intervals of gameplay they would pop up an ad that you had to click through.

absolutely negative. It would make me just hate this ad and stuff they are advertising.

Advertising should be in right expression in a right place. Take James Bond movies as example: certain class of credit cards, drinks, cars...all visible long enough. However, I can't see any ads in sci-fi or fantasy MMORPGS. Orc Shaman advertising Ford? Elf ranger advertising Nokia? Master Yoda calling "Buy new Samsung scanner you will"? No, thanks. However, in some post-apocalyptic game rare cellular phones could be Nokias, all cars - Fords.

However, in-game ads should mean also no subscription and no real-cash shops.

    Yes.

Provided the game is good and it's not pop up ads.

By good I mean better than a f2p game.

  • QuenchsterQuenchster Member Posts: 450

I wouldn't mind it, but I think it would be better for the sponsors and the players if advertisements were mostly just ad banners on loading screens next to the loading bar. It would be better for the sponsors because it would be right next to something players stare at. In games I find myself moving too fast to notice a lot of the small details of things like the labels on coke cans. For players it would be something out of the way and usually fast enough to not annoy them. It also wouldn't break too much of the theme or mood within the game.

Depends on if the game is fun.

How do you propose to get enough revenue from advertisements to actually support the game?  Unobtrusive isn't going to do it.

It was okay, but since it was one of the very few ads they had running, it got really obnoxious.  It was everywhere, over and over and over and over.  In fact, that ad was the only reason I started paying for an expansion, just so I could stop hearing it in my sleep.

I would if it was a good game.

I would only want the ads to be in-game, I wouldn't want ads that interupt gameplay and opens a browser or something like that.

Also, if the game had a modern or future setting it could also bring more immersion since ads are everywhere in real life. A medieval fantasy setting with in-game ads? I probably wouldn't play.

  • VassagoMaelVassagoMael Member Posts: 555

Depends on how the ads are integrated, but generally speaking if the game is GOOD and FUN then I will play it. But if every five minutes of game play I am interupted with a 30 second ad for Viagra, tampons, or pizza then I would not play it.

Free to play = content updates for the cash shop. Buy to play = content updates for the cash shop.
    Subscription = Actual content updates!

In a game like TSW or Auto Assault, I think it would really add to the game world. In a fantasy game I wouldn't care for it.

as much as this is a play it safe chicken *bleep* type answer it depends on how many adds there are. Every game i have played to date i was barely aware of the adds so i was easily able to tune them out.....if everywhere i see was an add then ya i would probably quit over it, so ya it all comes down to how many adds.
