Neverwinter: Three Men and a Dungeon Crawl

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

During this week's E3 convention, Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios pulled out all the stops to show off Neverwinter. We got our hands on the game and have a terrific first-hand report about how Neverwinter is shaping up. Read on!

During PAX East this year, we found ourselves completely blown away by Cryptic’s Neverwinter. I don’t think I’m being a jerk when I say no one really expected the game to be something that had us all here at the site salivating for more. But it did. During the course of our interview at Boston’s game convention, we all turned to each other at one point and pretty much decided then and there that we would make it our Game of Show. Now E3 comes along and the well-kept secret that Cryptic’s next MMO is actually one of the best looking titles on the horizon is starting to be unleashed. Garrett, a few others, and myself sat down to play through a portion of one of the game’s many dungeon-delves. I personally picked up the Trickster Rogue, and enjoyed every stabbity-stabbing minute of the experience.

I saw the gameplay at E3, the combat looked really fun.

Its nothing like Neverwinter Nights though, which is a shame.

Purely good combat does not satisfy me, then again if its F2P...

I'll play the free content with some mates but it would have to be incredibly and insanely great to ever get me to give one nickle of my money to the sorry management at Cryptic.  I truely feel sorry for the guys who work there.  Its a lot like Goonswarm, once you start there, no one else wants you.  Just ask the last two lead designers...

Let's face it the D&D ruleset does not lend itself well to MMO's.  Since that is the basic design of this game, I don't think they can make it a hit no matter what else they do.  I wish them well, but they have to be really brilliant with their design to surmount that major handicap.

    Eh?

    ...have you played 4e?

It's like someone took the old ruleset and said "lets make it play more like world of warcraft".

I'm very much so looking forward to this game. I've been playing the D&D computer games since the days of Baldur's Gate, so hopefully this will continue the good trend.

I'm sure this has been mentioned or maybe not, but will this game have any relation to Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 story wise? If so, I'm playing through them again. lol.

I believe it's set some years after NWN2, so I doubt it'll follow them storywise. However i'm sure it'll contain enough of the Neverwinter lore which should be good enough....Hopefully The Foundry will have good tools for user created content......because Neverwinter's very concept since introduced was providing players the ability to create their own storylines..

Well the druid class is gone and so am i.. =P

Not sure how it will stack up against the old guy on the bloc, though, will it lure people away from DDO with is new shiney looks and more true FR connection. Or will it be another Cryptic shot in the dark and hope to hit that we saw with champions and star trek.

This have been a good conversation

Believe it or not, that's why i am now kinda looking foward to this game.  4e was a great board game/ great mmo game and makes for a decent ruleset for an MMO.  I like to think that 4e was research for this game.

i agree with the people above who comment that ed4 is more  like a MMO than a pencil and paper RPG.  as far as pencil and paper goes, i cant stand ed4 but as a computer game i am looking forward to the game.  It will fly a lot better as MMO than ed3.5 did with DDO.

I am looking forward to this game. It's looming larger on my radar than anything else out there, except for GW2, that is. Thanks for the coverage.

I'm pretty sure the 4e rules were designed precisely for conversion into a video game of some sort, and most likely for MMO's.  They are the best fit for an MMO style game than any of the other rulesets.

I also got to try out Neverwinter during E3 and was equally blown away.  I'm so excited about it now!  The combat is really awesome and Im drooling to get my hands on the foundry system.

Combat is important but the toolset to create player created content is just as important to me.  Well that and whats kind of cash shop items it will have.

I want to see this game and see. I have to say E3 was a disappointment this year from the console hardware press releases. I think Ubisoft had best of show for press release that I saw but G4 coverage was not that impressive to me either. It did not seem like there was much that was exciting this year. I know PC doesn't get as much coverage as consoles there and some devs were not there but hope for better next year.

Edit: Forgot to add that I thank you for sharing this bit of information. Glad to see something about it.

I am pleasantly suprised by this one.  It looks to be very interesting.  Hope it lives up to all the hype.

Sounds like a potentially fun game, if it wasn't for the whole Perfect World part...
  • GolelornGolelorn Member RarePosts: 1,395

Sounds fun, but there is that whole Cryptic obstacle in the way.

  • SamhaelSamhael Member RarePosts: 1,498

Yeah, I'm a little paranoid about Cryptic due to their record lately. However, if the game is truely F2P and with no "pay to win" items, then I may give it a try.

For me its all about the game editor. If its good then i will be there, but..........................

Everytime I see the names Perfect World or Cryptic I just shudder and wonder what kind of crazy casino scam they have planned next.

Chomping at the bit to get my grubby hands on this beaut.

I really enjoyed Cryptics other games, easy to get into, quick action and nice graphics, I look forward to seeing what they can do with this title.
