Generally speaking, the opposite of this is true between MMO's and other genres on the PC and consoles. More MMO's are subscription based than any other genre, and their mission is measured excitement and the ever-dangled carrot. Console shooters by contrast (and just for the sake of example) have achieved their goal as soon as you buy the game, though they've started extending their business model further into the product's life with map packs and expansions and the like.

It's easy to say a lot of bad things about MMO's when you simplify things down to their most bare intentions, but a lot of players play these games because a lot of players find this style of game even more addictive than frustrating. It's not all that different than people who toil with busywork as a habit of their personality. A lot of people are like this, and it's easy to turn any amount of tedium into a game. The natural leap to converting this compulsion to a game model isn't even an incredibly long leap of logic, even for the least visionary developer.

Many hated on RIFT but it outlasted all expectation. That was a success. For TERA i worry lots, many have grown pass shiny and overhyped games, and what makes TERA great isnt really anything new but clever marketing. I admit i never played pass lvl20, but the point of playing a game is to have fun and waste time, you should not have to tolerate a game just to get to the good parts, we have console and other pc games for that.

I did not buy Tera (Played the beta), nor even touched GW2. I dont like hyping games for players to feed on, but the only game that stands out the moment is TSW. Hate it or like it, nothing beats shooting lightning from your fingers and saying "UNLIMITED POWER!".

What marketing.... The only marketing they ever did was the whole mmo-fo thing which to me was just funny but can't even count remotely close to any sort of marketing at all.

The whole MMO-FO thing, I just found it funny and took it as a joke. Some people found it insulting, I can understand why though.

Well MMO players and gamers in general can be too sensitive, I'm guilty of that myself sometimes.  I'll have to look it up.

Ok, looked it up, that wasn't so bad.  It really reminded me of the old Sega Genesis ads where they attempted to make everything seem "hardcore".  I thought it was funny, not insulting.

Tera already failed in Korea - not a good sign since it was designed for that culture if you ask me...  I just do not see it surviving in the US after TSW and GW2 launch.

tera is like lineage 2 without the risk and the cool pvp end game.

Subscription based is no excuse to create a carrot exactly like carrots before it. When your choice is an MMO that uses the exact same carrot as the last 2-20 you have played or an MMO that at least uses a carrot a LITTLE different than those before it...is there really a choice?

More over, when the only thing there is in the game is that single same old carrot until you get to the end...like in Tera, one is correct in thinking the game blows chunks. No amount of 8 year old Unreal 3 engine graphics or little girls running around in short skirts can take that away...if all there is thats being offered is end game, that means the majority of the game is crap, and the chore of doing a whole lot of the same is going to come quick.

Its time for MMO makers to change the way they look at making MMOs and start making the entire game from level 1 on...something that people would like to do over again instead of just lvl cap content good enough to do repeatedly.

I know I know...content that scales with the players level...omg noooo the horror of adding that extra bit of code to mobs and item tables to include each level bracket my head...its full of f*%# trying to think about it!...or the idea that 100% of the game could still be played by everyone instead of just a small amount made for max level...the pain...the horror of it!

    Must...not...break...tradition...must...use...only...a...carrot...

I kind of wish people would do a bit more research before they repeated internet memes.

"yes" it didn't do well when it launched. But it did have high interest. With fast leveling, a level cap of 50 and only 2 end game dungeons it didnt' leave much for people to do.

You will see it is the 9th ranked game and I believe 5th ranked mmo?

Not AMAZING but not really failing either.

Wow, so much negativity in this thread.

If you do not like a game, do not play it, simple.

Armchair developers think it is so easy, I am guessing it is not. If it was, everyone would be coding graphic engines and game worlds in record time.

I work in the financial industry, but my roots are in developing business applications. I can't imagine the difficulty in singlehandedly creating a graphics engine to not only look good, but support a MMO. Or modding one to create a dynamic world able to sustain a MMO.

You can be part of the solution, or add to the problem, it is YOUR choice. Negative comments that attack a game and the people playing it are part of the problem. Trolling the forum over and over saying the game failed is part of the problem. Last time I checked the game was jumping back and fourth from 3rd to 5th most played MMO in its respective region. That is NOT failing considering there are SO many options on that game list.

Except L2's pvp endgame was "the game".

Remember, when it launched people were doing the same pvp in the starter areas as they did with each level. They then added sieges but that wasn't "end game", it was also the game.

What L2 has over Tera is the territory control. I realize that the political system is territory control but (and I don't have all the particulars) my feeling is that it should be tied more to some sort of pvp mechanic.

I've read that battlegrounds might have something to do with this but will that realy fly on a pvp server?

When that carrot is proven market-successful over and over again, and you're a business and not an amateur armchair dev, yeah you use that carrot over and over until there is nothing left hanging from the string. On the whole I think you missed the point of my post, but that's fine.

Agreed. The Tera marketing was horrible. Just  some banners here and there and those incredibly stupid mmofo commercials.

My god those were awful commercials. They made the game look like the wet dream of some kind of repressed teenager.

    Worst mmorpg commercials ever.

4th not 5th mmo. Aion first then Lineage and then Lineage 2.

But that's not the point. The "fail" is to start at 1st then rapidly going 2nd , 3rd and finally 4th.

People say that Tera failed because it went from 37 to 15 servers. And because it didn't met  the expected financial targets in 2011.

I would actually posit that most games should not have as many servers as they launch wtiht and unfortunatley it is a necessary evil to accomodate the throng of people who try the game but would really not like it in the long run.

However, as I've mentioned, the game "failed" because it just didn't have enough at the end game and the leveling is very fast.

We are getting more in that department than the Koreans got at launch but I don't think that's enough to hold some hard core gamers.

It is my hope that Tera does shed some servers but retain enough players to be profitable. It still is running and "number 4" isn't anything to sneeze at provided it can be profitable in a way that the developers can continue the game.

That video was awesome. I am ordering a copy of Guild Wars 2 right now. That sold it for me. I am anticipating this game greatly. I playtested Diablo 3 and Secret World and was left wanting.
