This MMO is revolutionary for one reason...

Odd, i was thinking how SWTOR was the first MMO i have played to date that did not have a day/night cycle, so umm anyhow i guess that since GW2 has followed in the footsteps as other developers its revolutionary.

Sigh. Must the MMO traddies be so wretched with their constant trolling?

    Anyway...

I like what they're doing with how day/night works, and how certain things only occur at particular times. Even Skyrim didn't have that, so I was impressed. It's nice to see. Bandits that recognise that it's smarter to raid trade caravans under the cover of night, rather than doing it in broad daylight. There's no denying that this is intelligent stuff.

As for seasons - I agree. I don't know whether it's viable at the moment, though, which makes me sad. I mean, at least not in an MMO where lower end computers are required, or not on a console where hardware restraints are a concern. That's what's holding us back - old technology. There are a lot of factors that would need to be covered with seasons, such as falling leaves with physics, snow piles with physics, and so on, and so on.

It's something I want to see (I would love to see, and we may see as a Skyrim mod), but I can understand why it isn't a priority for developers right now. Maybe in about five years or so, eh? It could be the big thing in an upcoming MMO then!

No offence meant, so don't jump down my throat, but that's not what people are talking about.

The day/night cycle isn't purely aesthetic. Stuff happens based upon time of day or night, that only happens at that time of day or night. And there's stuff like this all over the world. There are even weapons and armour which change what they do based upon whether it's day or night, in regards to their visuals and their abiliites.

So it has a lot of impact on the game. Like I said, one example is that trade caravans can feel safe in the middle of the day, but at night they may have to deal with bandit raids under the cover of darkness. That is in and of itself pretty intelligent and new.

I think that's what people are happy about.

People taking this thread seriously? OP, I applaud you. People fell for an obvious troll thread with such ease. Did not think I would see the day that trolling would be this damn easy.

    It wasn't a troll.

    Sigh.

He was talking about how certain events only happen at certain times of the day. You don't get exactly the same things happening at both day and night like you do in prior MMOs.

He was just conveying his point poorly.

For those curious, TotalBiscuit mentions it in his Thief gameplay video (one of the most recent).

To save you having to hunt it down and watch the entire thing, he mentions the ruins of an abbey where he went when the sun was up and nothing was there, but after the sun went down it would likely be invaded by ghosts. This has been convered in interviews and videos before. It's pretty neat.

That's where the day/night cycle changes from other MMOs, stuff happens differently based upon the time of day (or night, as it is).

Hmm, I don't know. I thought that GW2 was revolutionary because it included dragons in it.

Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

A nice change of pace from the constant day/night in other games and MMOs, or the day/night not being dynamic and only happening at certain parts of the story.

This is revolutionary because a lot of games are starting to get rid of the day/night, because it is much too hard to code. However, Arenanet sees the power of the day/night and even has certain events happen depending on the time of day.

Arenanet has proven that even the hardest thing to code in a game (MMO or singleplayer) is day/night and they've done it.

    Nice job Arenanet. :D

Please go install Lord of the Rings Online and  create a hobbit. There's a quest in the Shire that wants you to investigate a certain incident that only occurs at night. Trolls wander the roads at night in certain areas. During the day, you will not see them.

Mortal Online requires the use of torches during nighttime.

    Arenanet did nothing new there!

But even that's not revolutionary.  As many have said in EQ certain events only took place at night.  Entire zones would change from being low level to high level.  Different monsters would appear.  Time specific events (such as Halloween events) would occur only at night.  Night required some form of light source unless your race had a form of night vision or you would be wandering off cliffs and into packs of monsters you couldn't see frequently.

Besides there are other things about GW2 that are (more) revolutionary.

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
