I do not like the combat in TERA, the inability to cancel a move is ridiculous. No strategy involved there, just lame combat mechanices. The more I see of this game the less I like it.

As for Pokket, certainly would not enjoy grouping with her, she does not seem to be a very good player, although the game is new to her.
What in gods name are you talking about? Tera requires more skill and strategy to play than any other mmo. You have to know when to use your skills and not just spam the attacks like you obviously do (Assuming, since you say you cannot cancel moves). I think it brings out better skilled players that know when to attack and not just spam keys.

This game requires skill and strategy to pvp.. sorry to break that to you.

Nice work pokket.  Great review.  It really show us how the game plays especially compared to the other mmos.  Keep it up.  Thanks!

  • jfz133jfz133 Member Posts: 15

Saying that mainstream MMOs don't require any thought process and are only about spamming keys and watching cooldowns is far from the truth. Yes, in most MMOs you can get to a decent level without understanding your class, but if you get into any kind of raiding or competitive PvP (I don't mean ganking lowbies in leveling zones) you won't get very far by playing that way. Ressources and cooldowns management are a big part of end game PvE and PvP in any game. And above that, there is teamwork. Nothing there is exclusive to Tera.

The combat is different when comparing it with mainstream games, but the game mechanics are all the same.

I think its because Pokket put the video in fast motion, so theyre normal breathing looking like heaving

I watched 90 seconds of that video and thought, "IT'S THE SAME...DAMN...CRAP!"

    Zero interest.

As for the game. It looks more like a MMOAG, mmo action game. I forsee people running around in circles and jumping all over the place in battle, like a bunch of idiots. Huge immersion breaker. Very unrealistic. Graphics engine looks like it is good but the art is terrible. Certainly geared towards undersexed teens. With that in mind I can only imagine how putrid the community is going to end up being.

LOL, so what combat mechanic is very realistic?  The MMORPGs you claim that have cooldown and ability queues?  Let's per say...WoW or SWTOR?

I would love to see how realistic that turns out to be in real life.

In fact, why don't you demonstrate for us this, "very realistic" gameplay by recording yourself in real life in ability queue for 3 seconds to throw a grenade, meanwhile an enemy is shooting at you from 10 feet away with an AK47.

Then I'll believe just how "very realistic" that combat mechanic is, that is, if you managed to survive 30-40 bullets.  LMFAO!

GRIND sucks? You wanna be max level in a month?

Already Preorder the game and hope that it will be worth playing past the Betas and staying with this game for awhile, however the moment they might choose to add a cash shop, and charge extra insane amount of money I will UnSubsubscribe.

The game I do have to say looks better than SWTOR in all ways, I like Star Wars, but I feel that Tera has way better graphics detail than SWTOR, and based on this video there are improvements that can be made, such as allowing your character to look behind and such.

Also the Copy/Paste Bosses, that is one bad thing I find about this game why would you Copy/Paste the same Boss Skin/Mesh/Model to another location in a game editor, and then Click it and adjust its HP and stats a bit higher level and yet it is the same exact boss, this is the exact same thing they did in Fallen Earth which is a MMO released way before Tera, I feel that the bosses need to be reskined and created to look more beastful looking or something depending on the level of boss you are fighting and such.

Maybe they will make more changes to the game to improve it before release I have no idea but I have finally got the full beta client patched and waiting to check it out, as for the game beign like vindictus I don't know do you actually have to click to sling your weapons, and such that is soemthign I wait to find out about.

Btw, about Tera, I am still not sure what is going on between NCsoft and Tera, I have heard so many rumors from my friend about the whole mess, but you know if the Developers of Tera do not get on the ball, and improve all the functions players want, NCsoft could still always try to release Lineage 3, or if they win a legal battle they could get TERA handed to them, and mess up the game for everyone, not exactly something I want to think about although I am in support of Tera simply because of the bad support NCsoft has given me after being a subscriber to Lineage 2 for years and no support after having my account ripped off when they could have recovered my items and got the person who did it. I just hope that the rumors I hear are not fully true about what some say, other than what I have read in the civil dispute posted online many places about Tera.

Over All, I still think Tera will be more fun than SWTOR has been on launch even if it does lack some things.

Its pretty much wat I expected from Tera. Seems pretty much like Aion with better graphics and a bit more active combat. Dunno where all the hype is coming from. Ppl are probably just desperate for a new sub based mmo (just coz they believe mmos with subs are better quality).

    Meh...

Looking forward to EQL and EQN.

i think Pokket has been a bit over hyped by horny fat nerds who have nothing better to do than watch chicks stream MMo's

Aw come on guys, no need to attack her personally.  She is here doing her job, and she just so happens to be good looking, no harm in that.

As it comes, every game has it's various players.  Players always vary in skill, race, sex, sexual orientation, what they define as fun, what they are in the mmo for, and so on.

So when you encounter people that perhaps are new or lack skill, regardless of anything, how about you help em out and help make the game a more positive place to be instead of being detrimental to the game's community. (sorry about the mini-rant but people who put others down based on their skill severly annoy me.)

So cut her some slack, she is doing her job and giving the site the videos.

    ----

On the other hand, Tera looks interesting, but I am not sure if it will be the game for me.  If you can level so quickly and not have much to do at the end, I duno..but we will see!

Look pal, its this simple......We want reviewers who,   and get this, this is reallllly off the charts,   KNOW HOW TO REVIEW GAMES.

Wow, what a thought!   It has nothing to do with her 'personally'...This is business...And the problem with her is she doesnt know her business.

Its not our job to 'help' her in her job, regardless of what you think...

WE WANT SKILLED REVIEWERS WHO ANSWER/COMMENT ON IN GAME MECHANICS.

Not ones who attain their jobs based on their looks alone.

The review speaks for itself. Its bad and doesnt cover several topics of interest.

Cmon MMORPG get her out of here and get someone competent.

Look pal, its nothing against her 'personally'.....SHE DOESNT KNOW HOW TO DO HER JOB IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER AND THIS REVIEW IS A REFERENCE OF THAT. PERIOD.

SHE MISSED SEVERAL GAME MECHANICS THAT MANY PLAYERS ARE INTERESTED IN, JUST GLOSSED RIGHT OVER THEM.

WE WANT REVIEWERS WHO KNOW WTF THEYRE DOING. NOT ONES WHO GET THEIR JOB BASED ON WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE AS OPPOSED TO THEIR MERITS.

cmon MMORPG, get it together and give us better reviewers. Horrible reviewer

    I disagree.

I got a clear idea of what the game is about and how it plays from ths review. Granted, it could be more in-depth, but it was never presented as an "in-depth" review of the game. It was clearly presented as a first-impression Beta review done in a short time frame format.

Pokket speaks in a way that is natural for her, and that is something I very much appreciate. She is easy to understand, doesn't slur her words or drop vocalizations to the point they are hard to hear. She doesn't drone or gush.

I really think the problem here is the watcher, not the review.

    ;)

GW2 doesn't plan on implementing raids, so is that a problem? Doesn't seem like it for most people. Not to mention TERA does have raid like events now, you have monster invasions(rifts) that will open up and it will take twenty people to close the rifts, closing them earns you tokens you can use to buy cosmetics/armor.

Exactly. TERA and GW2 are being designed without the intention of having Traditional Raids and are focusing elsewhere. They both seem to be focusing on creating the most challenging, fun and varied 5-man Instances as their own form of PvE endgame. I say let them. We have enough Raiding MMORPGs as it is.

In the little research I've done I've seen qoutes of En Masse stating they are "looking in" to add larger then 5 man instances after launch. My understanding was this is something they are adding to the us release. If anyone has a recent qoute from En Masse stating this not to be true i'd love to see it.

@Teraversity: "Due to the delay in launch, should raid content (with more than 5 players) make its way in to TERA by then?"

Yes content involving more than 5 players is one area we are looking at before launch but nothing more to say at this time.

    for reference

    http://nichannel.blogspot.com/2011/08/tera-en-masse-questionreponse-avec-les.html

Now i've seen on their forums that they plan to make this content 10 man, now numbers to what some consider a 'real raid' are subjective but this is something they are planning to add.

I love TERA. I have been playing KTERA for some time now. I am thrilled a mmo has brought action combat to the genre, and TERA has nailed it. I can't put the game down.

I did not care for this review at all. Please, mmorpg.com, get some reviewers that understand game mechanics. This is unacceptable.

Let me tell you this ... i pumped alot of game time into K-Tera and i'm apsolutely in love with it so im not even going to mention EU Pre-Beta and upcoming CBT's where i will be playing again. i dont care what Wow carebares or even SWTOR fanboys or .. well girls say .. Tera just rocks .. even tho it has the usual guesting system and nothing really new about it, it still rocks all my socks.

The combat system seems to an issue for alot of people ... mainly because we are all used to tab target people and it ttakes time to get used to just aiming at people .. well i'm very good at that .. spent 4 years with the biggest Call Of Duty Clans in the world so i can aim :D but its of course completle different, but anyways ... it takes ALOT longer than 22 levels to get used to the combat and aiming and moving while u fight or PVP in Tera  .. it actually requiers skill and not like some simple "tabtarget- spank-and-tank" game play where people seem to think that they are elite.

now the second thing ... There are no delays between the skills .. well there might be a little tiny one when u trigger a new chain skill to start off your chain but if u noticed while using skills u get the "space bar" indicator on your screen if u use skills in a chain or well premade chainskills... theres no dayls plaus u can aim and move and do whatever you want when u know how to and if u know what you wanna do and which skills to execute :P

little tip .. trigger your first skill in the chain and then keep using spacebar and u will notice the speed and a decent phace in your fights and PVP. plus u will be able to turn yourself which ever way u want.

I've noticed over time that some people aren't affected by (don't notice) game delays as much as others.

I'm mystified here - why would you take offense at what she said? I don't see where it disagrees with you, except your impression of the combat vs hers. Just becuase she didn't fall  down in a fit over how much she loved the game doesn't mean her review was off the mark. All games, especially MMOGs, have a personal emenent and will speak to some people and not to others. And, she liked the game, and didn't say it was horrible in any way.

She also clearly stated that this was a review limited to the first 21 levels, so imcomplete from that viewpoint alone.

One of the ways I judge the partiality of posters is how much they bash people who like different elements or games than they do. Your sneer at WoW and SWTOR players is a clear indication that you are some kind of narrow-minded TERA fanboy yourself. I find it incredible you'd label WoW players "carebears" when the game you are a fan of is TERA.

TERA appears to be a good game; that's what I got from the review. It actually made me want to try it out. All games have issues, especially when considered from a personal viepoint - how can you review a game without considering your personal tastes at all? I thought Pokket did a good job talking about elements that were a bit of an issue for her without over-emphasizing them.

The only thing that bothered me was some of the issues she talked about were not true, you can turn your screen while running, you can dodge or block in the middle of most skills and the "delay" between skills acts as a global cooldown because there is not one in TERA.

As well as the quests, almost all monster locations appear on the map for quests, so i'm not sure why she said it seems it only does for a few. Not to mention those weren't world bosses she was fighting, only normal elites and a quest monster, besides the spider(arakia) which was infact a world boss using the "ovolith" monster model.

Also there is a lot of PvP contrary to what you said, it's a heavy PvP centric game, with entire guilds being able to wage wars on other guilds and deathmatches of up to 10v10 you can wager on. Unless you were talking about low levels, not much PvP except for Open world PK.

Regardless, i've gotten less hasty towards the review as time passed but really i'd just want the information presented to be more precise, I won't judge based on different tastes anymore, because well, that is unfair.

The mobs skins were mildly reused throughout the first 2 zones, after that they're RARELY reused. Maybe a little here and there. The questing is meant to be quest/grinding, there are very few go here pick this item up, or go here escort this person. 90% of the quests is go here kill this many mobs, and go here kill these mobs to get this amount of quest items. The leveling is supposed to be fast, questing is easy and straight forward. 99% of the quests have the objective in blue name that you can track

This game is about skill and accuracy, if you need to cancel and ability you shouldnt have used it when you did. THAT IS HOW THIS GAMES STRATEGY WORKS. If this game had skill canceling it would make the combat lame and less strategic. If you're also button mashing in this game, you're going to be terrible at the game.

BAMS / World bosses in this game are supposed to hit extremely hard and 1 shot people. That is how the combat works, you're supposed to know how the mob attacks and its skills and learn how to dodge them and avoid taking damage. THE BEST PLAYERS can solo BAMS/world bosses without getting hit 90% of the time.

People can res in combat but if they're hit its canceled. You guys shouldnt have been dying so much if you knew how the boss worked.

You are wrong about being able to turn the camera, you can turn the camera while doing actions and moving and also while standing still with mouse button 3

Im also kind blown away by the fact that you said there is no PvP in this game as if it isnt a PVP BASED GAME. Just because there wasnt a PvP server in CBT1 doesnt mean there isnt going to be PvP. You should choose your words more carefully.

You're a good looking lady but i expected more in terms of review, quiet a bit of false information and you focused on the simple basic meaningless details instead of the amazing unqiue features this game has compared to other games.

I give this review a 6/10 and thats being polite

  • yowaveyowave Member Posts: 8

She says that you can't cancel the animation of an executed skill, but in all my tests i was able to do so by dodging -.-.

Pokket is getting bashed to hell on the Tera forums and well I can't say that what they are saying is wrong... She really knows very little about Tera and said a lot of incorrect things in her "review". If you want to use her as a pin up girl maybe feed her lines or at least make sure she has the correct information.
  • SlickShoesSlickShoes Member UncommonPosts: 1,019

This isn't even a review guys, are you all illiterate?

BETA IMPRESSIONS. She had access to the beta, played form level 1-22 and gave us a quick look at the game. The beta was one weekend, any look at the game is not going into serious depth in that time frame.

Would you all be whinging if some fat dude had done the video? probably not.

Go down the Giant Bomb route and call these "Quick Look", in no way is it a review its just a video of someone playing the game for a bit with some commentary.
