General: Laws of MMO Gaming

It is no secret that MMOs tend to borrow liberally from one another features-wise. Often however, there are more similarities between MMOs than meets the eye, those things that remain off the official 'features list'. In today's Player Perspectives, MMORPG.com's Isabelle Parsley a sort of Murphy's List of truisms that span nearly every game out there. See if you agree or if you have more to add to those she's discovered.

Over the years, I’ve noticed that most MMOs have a number of things in common, and I’m going to share my wisdom with you today; old hands may recognize a number of these – and might even be able to add to them – and new players will, at last, be enlightened as to why that last foozle is never there to kill when you need it.

Excellent post. While we are indeed a captive audience, our numbers seem to be dwindling as far as "AAA" games, and perhaps joining the freeloaders in the FtP games just for something to do while we wait for "something else".

I'll add a couple (or more if I find time to come back to this).

Your new friends won't be for long: You make a new friend, someone you've seen around recently, maybe run across running the same quests for levels and gear. But in a few days, they have either outpaced you or fallen behind you, and the 2 of you no longer have "anything in common". You go your separate ways, as the laws dictate you must.

Your Guildmaster will disappear: Yes, you've found a new guild, and the guildmaster seems of the same kind as you. You are happy to be a part of this guild. But then your Guildmaster has leveled up, maxed out, reached "End Game" and done it all. They then disappear as they check out a new game, or play another game for a while. Your guild becomes stagnant, and your Guildmaster may never return to this particular guild.

    Once upon a time....

Not only will your guildmaster disappear, sometimes your whole guild will.  Most often though, you'll join, and the next day it will schism, and you'll end up with two new guild leaders asking you to join them and not the other guy but when you ask about what happened to cause the split, neither one will tell you, or they'll blame the other guy's drama.

Rule 1 also works with certain types of loot.

Maybe its for a quest / crafting / achievement.. You have loads of different sorts and you are dropping valuable vendor trash on the ground to make room for it all just in case...

And when you finally cave in and drop one of these types of loot, you wil soon learn that its for something vitally important.. and you will then spend the next week trying to farm another one...

And while they dropped from every other mob 2 minutes ago, now they are nowhere to be found

And much like crafting, the rewards you get from mid level dungeons are certain to be useless by the time you get them, especially if they are part of a set.

At least in modern MMOs XP is gained so fast that you will outlevel any reward you can get while trying to get it.

The only cure being to farm it for an alt and then take highlevels to that midlevel dungeon to blast through it a gazillion times to make sure you get all the items, while at the same time removing the xp reward that you suddenly dont want so much.

Gah.  Bad memories indeed, and from several different games.  I think it has led to my packrat hoarding tendencies.  Or made them worse, anyway.

    Missed one rule:

If you're a plate wearer and a BOP drops it will be cloth.  If in cloth... it's plate.

Oh jeeze, how could we miss the obvious one?

That's not always such a bad thing; I've received gold from a guild I was in less than a week, when they cleared out the Gbank and passed the coins around.

    I liked your list!

I soon discovered there was a word for that: gimp.

Reminded me of my poor first character in AC, Vicar, the axe and run specialized gimp.  His high strength made him a decent mule when I reached the point when leveling him was a pain in the ass and I rerolled life mage.

I guess "flavor of the month class/build" would make for another rule, since class balancing usually produces them.
