General: GDC Online: Evans and Vogel Speak of the Future

GDC Online is considered to be a "user friendly" gaming convention, one that many MMO players look to for new information about the games they love. MMORPG.com Industry Relations Manager Garrett Fuller had the opportunity to sit down for a chat with Eugene Evans of Bioware Mythic and Rich Vogel from Bioware to talk about the course the conference is taking and the trends in the industry that keeps growing. Read on!

Rich Vogel started off the conversation talking about how the conference reflects the current trends in online gaming. The keynote speakers being the biggest sign of what is happening among online games. This year key notes have been set up to address all types of online and social games. One area that is critical for the conference is realizing the connection of all players through different platforms. With phones, pads, and computers all able to access the internet from almost anywehre, games are constantly looking at ways to keep their players connected. This approach extends into the community as well where companies are now looking to keep the communities connected through different platforms as well.

    A lot of bla bla bla.  Let me paraphrase.  F2P is here.  Now we need to really ramp up the spin and engauge our potential audience in the managerial mumbo jumbo akin to Mohammad Ali's rope a dope.  Basically just move the customers around the ring, tire them out with all the spin and marketing crap.  In the end they will settle for the abundance of mediocrity we create.

     

    Now more than ever, we're going to need to look to alternative revenue streams.  Ipad, iphone, console, etc.  MMO's will not solely be relegated to PC, because we can make cheap crappy games cross platform.  They're all basically very similar games, but lets reframe the conversation and call it choice.  People like choice because it makes them feel empowered....marketing research tells us this.

    not playing is also a choice, you know. a powerful one. maybe people should exercise it more instead of playing sheep online.
