Blizzard has fallen victim to their own greed!

FadedbombFadedbomb Aiken, SCPosts: 2,081Member

After the recent news about Torchlight II's features, such as:

-COMPLETELY Randomized Dungeons

-Offline Play

-No Real Money AH

-Retails for $20

-LAN

AND

-FULLY MODDABLE

It's almost blindingly obvious how MUCH the Torchlight developers truly care for their fanbase. Unfortunately for me I can't get into Torchlight because of it's kindergarten style graphics so i won't be playing it, but overall it seems like they ACTUALLY give a damn about continueing their own product & growing their fanbase.

Yet, Blizzard on the other hand WILL have the following "features" for their Diablo III release:

-NO LAN PLAY

-RETAILS FOR $50-60 (betting on $60)

-NOT MODDABLE

-ONLINE PLAY ONLY (single player was removed)

-REAL $$ Auction Houses

-Dungeons that are NOT random (e.g: each area has MAYBE 2-3 different varients, that is NOT random).

-An inventory & item system taken directly from WoW

So, YEA.....totally depressed now, because the Diablo franchise has been shat all over :'(

What have they fallen victim to? I'm pretty sure D3 will still sell more copies than TL2. Fully moddable is a blessing and a curse, people don't seem to understand this.

look at diablo 2, compare that list with diablo 3 taking into account that everyone and their mother has internet (doesnt mean you have to play with other people)

Basically your definition of greed is retailing a triple A game at the normal price verses an Indie game at 20, yes torchlight is very similar but alot of features in D3 that are not in Torchlight2, and i think the other main word in this arguement would end up being POLISH

    WTF is a torchlight 2?

    -Everyone not on MMORPG.com

My definition of greed is DESTROYING your product for a few extra bucks.

Diablo 2 has more features than Diablo 3 has, simply because they want more MONEY from diablo 3. The removal of offline play is somehow connected with piracy, but pirates will ALWAYS find a way around anti-piracy measures. Meaning that only people who legitimately purchase diablo 3 will be hurt by this, and NOT the pirates.

Blizzard have, indeed, fallen VERY far since Diablo II.

the term "fanboy" gets thrown around on these forumns way to much lately..

I don't see how anything diablo 3 has would be considered "greedy", comparing the torchlight series to the diablo series is like comparing a hybrid to a ferrari, you get what you pay for... end of discussion.

I don't really know why people hate blizzard so much, they make quality games. Name one blizzard game that wasn't quality.

I won't even get into how ridiculous hating a online game for not having offline gameplay is since it's been discussed to death. I'm clearly not affected by that since I didn't once play any diablo game "offline".

Coming from someone who hates the Diablo series, This thread is insane.

Your anger at Blizzard is missdirected.  Blizzard was never greedy as a studio, the money grubbing came into play when Blizzard was bought out by activision who has a well documented history of greed and money grubbing.  The companies Activision, EA, and SOE are all some of the worst things to happen to the gaming industry.  All three of them are bottom line companies who are only out to make a quick buck, and don't care about their product quality.

If your interested in a good read check this link out for a very informative history on activision and it's CEO.

This is wrong in too many ways to count. First of all Torchlight was produced by an indy company... One started by the lead designer of Diablo 1 & 2. Since then they have made so much money off from sales of Torchlight that even Microsoft took notice and sought them out to put it on Xbox Live Arcade. They've also made enough that Runic Games is now considered a AAA company.

Second did you ever play Torchlight? It had more 'Polish' than about 90% of commercial releases in the last 10 years. I would actually say it had more 'Polish' than Diablo 2 had at release.

Thirdly because the lead designer on Torchlight 2 was the main driving force behind Diablo 1 & 2 the direction of Torchlight 2's features is more in line with what the Diablo franchise should be doing. These 'extra' features in Diablo 3 are for one purpose only... to soak as much money out of consumers as possible.

The main difference is this... Diablo 3 is made by a company that cares about one thing... The bottom line. Torchlight 2 is being made by a company that also only cares about one thing... Gamers.

Bren, comparing TL 1 and D2 doesnt work they where releasd no where near each other, i was saying to compare feature lists, and aside from no single player D3 has more going for it than D2

and since OP didnt really add this to his ramble, D3 will have Real money auctions and ingame money auctions, no one has to use real money unless they want to. Which is pretty much how it is now anyway except 3rd party sites selling gold are getting the money instead of the company making the game.

Give more money to the company get more good quality games. In no way has blizzard activision started pumping out POS recopy's of their games yet, which is why Blizzard is sucessful and extremely popular.

Everyone knows all the real talent left Blizzard a long time ago. Now they're just an empty shell of their former selves, another money-grubbing subsidiary of Activision.

Yet all the little fanboy sheeple will be lining up on release day, baaa-ing and opening their wallets, begging on hand and knee for their copy of Diablo 3. And Blizzard will make millions because of it.

    I pity them.

This guy is called the Anti Fanboy, he thinks when someone trys to back up a company or a game he feels is unethical or even just plain stupid, that that person is a fanboy who would just pull their pants down for said company.

If that kind of fanboy exists there are not many of them, as gamers we all know that if a game sucks we wont buy it, whens the last time you bought a game cause you loved the company just to let it sit and never play it? That would be stupid.

The talent left blizzard might be a true statement, but they are still making killer games like SC2 and while I feel WoW is super easy its still one of the highest quality MMOs.  Just look at other games that are made by one guy, lets say Richard Garriot, after the ultima series he kind of started making pretty bad games.  You can win them all is all im saying.

P.s Im actually not going to buy Diablo 3, but thats because i think the replay value for me will not be as much as other games in similar genre's coming out soon.

I never compared TL1 and D2 directly... only the level of polish each game had. Polish does not factor in features it's a measure of how stable a game is and how few bugs there are. In this regard you can compare games decades apart.

Torchlight and Torchlight 2 are conceived by the same minds that gave us Diablo 1 & 2 so they are more of a spiritual successor to the Diablo franchise than Diablo 3 will be. Diablo 3 has absolutely none of the talent that gave us the first 2 games. That talent is working hard at Runic Games making sure Torchlight 2 will be all that fans expect from them and more.

Only real arguement i have with this is, yea T1 and T2 being made by the Diablo guys is cool but so was hellgate london . . . . Im actually glad T2 will have multiplayer, that missing from T1 was a major oversite (kind of part of polish).  but other than that comparing games a Decade apart is never a good idea just because of how far along technology has come. I mean if i was deving D2 and ran into bugs no one has ever seen before its gonna take awhile to fix, where as T1 hey ive made a similar game before oh and this bug, i know how to fix this from past experiance or new trianing i have recieved etc.

You do understand that every developer is working a job right? If they weren't getting paid do you think they would make games? You can't live off ideals friend. So saying TL2 is being made by a company that only cares about gamers is foolish and just outright idiotic. TL and TL2 are products to get people in the store to promote their bigger better item that eventually will come out.

Every game company cares about gamers to an extint, some more than others.. why? well who the hell buys their games? Think about it for a bit.

  • Dreamo84Dreamo84 Niagara Falls, NYPosts: 3,437Member Uncommon

I like how defending Blizz makes you a fanboi, but defending Runic just as blindly is quite alright.

Personally, I don't  care what a company does. If I like their game I will buy it, if I dont, well then I won't. But until I see not for profit organizations making video games I wont expect them to not care about the money.

p.s. you're foolish if you really think any company cares about you more than the money.

i dont know how anyone can defend blizzard they are clearly nickle and diming their fanbase. They know blizzards fans are obsessed with their titles and are willing to pay anything and accept anything if it has blizzard on the box. im pretty convinced that alot of the worlds population are all part of some giant hive mind.

The price of gasoline is solely due to greed, however, yet people still drive cars. The price of satellite tv or cable is due to greed, yet people still subscribe. The entire concept of a gambling casino is due to greed, yet people still visit Vegas. In fact, the entire concept of capitalism is based upon 'maximizing profits' which is just a politically correct term for 'greed'. And yet people have determined it is the best economic system to follow.

We participate in this system for one reason and one reason only. We get something out of the deal. Our cable bill is high, but we wouldn't cancel it because we have still determined the entertainment value we receive is still worth the price. We still drive our cars and poo poo mass transit because the price of gas is still worth our independence. We still go to Vegas, because, damn, it is fun.

All of this is to say; if I am entertained by D3, I'm willing to accept Blizzard's greed as I do with every transaction in which money exchanges hands in this capitalistic economy.
