Should I wait until the big patch or start now?

I played trial and enjoyed the riskyness of the game but the grind was intense. What should I do? wait for patch or start now?

funny, i was just looking at the info on darkfall myself to see if i should try it now or not.   ...

i just read where they are going to wipe the servers once the new 2.0 comes out, so guess my quesstion is, does anyone know when this might take place, ?  dont see any reason to start playing now if its like in the next month or so.

last i heard they hadn't yet decided if they were going to wipe or not. and as for the eta they recently announced that their earlier (unnanounced) eta was being pushed back due to bugs with the new siege system. so eta is... unknown +1?

I'd say, wait. The upcoming DarkFall 2.0 sounds interesting enough, however Aventurine are still unsure wether they will wipe or not the servers (which in itself could be a confirmation that they will indeed wipe, but we don't know for sure). Until the Wipe issue is cleared up, not worth starting now in my opinion. In the off-chance that AV *does* wipe, you'd have wasted all that time for nothing.

As for the Grind, it's been reduced quite a bit, and the latest blog has made mentionned of reducing it even more and allowing new players to be viable by focusing on a single path at first. How much of this will be true, I don't know but I'm hopefull. If they can pull it off, it will be great.

Looks like several of us are waiting to pull the trigger on DFO.Problem is they are so vague on when 2.0 will release.I think people are still waiting for a ETA on the ETA!

    Several things to consider here.

First of all, all the wipe talk, was completely created by (mostly) unsubbed players, given the amount of new stuff.  Recently the developer stated that its way to early to even discuss such a thing, that one isnt needed, however if they were to wipe it wouldnt be as drastic as under the current system.  Granted he said one wasnt required, he didnt say in giant bold letter no wipe...which threw fuel on the fire for those who started the wipe talk.

For each type of wipe, there are already stated reasons why one wouldnt be needed, both stat and bank wipe.  For stat wipe, the main concern was that other players are farther ahead of newer players (lol..its a mmo) however in 2.0 new players would be able to be pvp viable in a specialized role though a short amount of casual play, as stated in the blogpost by the dev.  So that seems to remedy that issue, on top of him saying a wipe isnt necessary.

For a bank wipe, people state that this new gear, completely redone, would require wiping everything in everyones bank, even stuff not effected by the changes.  However they are adding a new salvage skill, also there are NPC's to sell obsolete gear, as well as a trash can...also previous patches rended gear obsolete with no wipe and no consequences.  Any worries about old duped gear, its all already been made obsolete.

So for everyone worried about a wipe, many remain hopefull, however its a huge stretch, and would end up pissing off most current subscribers.

So the next question is...should you wait?

Well, given the amount of changes and the companies known ability to take forever on stuff, granted that work has been started for over a year now on all this...i would expect no later than 2013, despite they hint that the patch would be ready sometime in the next two quarters.  They have stated that they are polishing the current seige system as the last efforts on DF 1.0... So its your call on when you think this will all happen and if you want to wait.

If you do decide to start playing, there are several advantages.  First of all many people are in fact waiting on the sidelines, which means right now, to start out fresh, you can expect to have some relative peace on the PVE side, most of the tower protected resources are not camped like they use to be, the dungeons are not packed fill of grinders and constantly patrolled by gank squads.  Dont get me wrong you sill will get ganked as a noob, just not as often.

Also, with the smaller community whos decided to play through the old version, the people you doo meet get to know you quite quickly.  Ive found a lot of people who are willing to help out new players than in the past, not just with gear but advice.

Im not going to lie though, right now, the starter areas are ghost towns for the most part, knowing where to look...there are still plenty of people playing, just most are in the pvp hotspots, in clan towns ect.  It can be unsettling to new players...also since the alignment system is messed up, there are lots of friendly players who are rednamed and not allowed to come close to the starter areas...ive actually seen a fair amount of red names that were not interested in killing me or my stuff, which wasnt the case a year ago.

    TLDR?

The wipe talk is community based not develoepr based, as it looks it makes little sense to do one (they stated they dont have to).  Right now the game offers a majority of peacefull pve for new players, with some ganking.  Its going to be advantagous to start now, build up and inventory, knowhow, and community connections than in 2.0 when the hordes of new players jam up all the starter areas.

And if you look at it in the long term, as a new player, 2.0 will get here before you feel hopelessly lost in skill grinding...i should also add that the lack of players (for me at least) is highlighting what a fun PVE game this really is...since your probably not going to be seiging untill after 2.0 comes out (far too much grinding required in 1.0)

going to wait personally until we know 100% if there will be an item wipe or character wipe and if they will fix the grind. in the mean time i will keep playing MO, but i really hope darkfall 2.0 lives up to what the original darkfall should have been.

Therewill be no wipe, the faster you startt the better off you'll be, if you start on US server send Timothias FearsNoEvil a tell for gear and advice.

  • deathshrouddeathshroud Member Posts: 1,366

     There wont be.

Mechanically the game will change to make it easy for you to be competative in a specialization.

You wont have to be a full hybrid to compete, which is why it took ages to grind up to a competative level, you had to grind everything.

Also, gear is essentially getting reset without wiping everything, old stuff will be obsolete on a competative level, salvage skill/NPC/Trash for anything that becomes garbage.

They have said a wipe isnt needed, mechanical changes to the game to remedy people concerns over the fact that its a damn mmorpg and that people are going to be further in progression than you.

  • deathshrouddeathshroud Member Posts: 1,366

i understand as a new player people will be further progressed than me, but after 1 year of casual play i usually expect that to not be the case.

I think in 2.0 your looking at like a few weeks of casual play to get competative in one specilaization.

The only reason its currently a year long process to get up to par, is that you really need to be good in every aspect, since hybrids rule. Also the magic school is quite redundant and a huge time sink to skill...also your pretty much gimped without it, even if you go magekiller wich blocks higher magic, you still need to use the debuff school.

I just hope 2.0 doesnt turn darkfall into just another "endgame then pvp ina  month or less" type games.  The big draw for me was that there was a TON of skills to skill up, and nothing quite skilled up quickly.  So few games have really epic pve, and none that do have epic pve add the constant threat of ffa full loot pvp.

If you actually like the sandbox pve of darkfall, you stop really caring that there are others out there who can wreck you with ease.

Personally (and i know im in the minority) i would have rather that they added some form of easy to find pvp for lowbies and mid-stat characters, rather than to make the progression easy.  Lots of people said "grind grind grind" but in a sandbox you only really grind if you choose so...right?  Most sandbox games ive played theres always a bunch of people who dont get it, and cry "theres nothing to do but grind in this game"

I disagree.... Ive been playing since day one and now is a good time for someone to come in and try it out - with "less" population it's been easier to skill up in and around the newbie areas without getting griefed at all times.

Now is a great time really, alot of vets have left waiting for the patch(namely thinking there will be a wipe, but AV never stated this). I returned two days ago, and have had no issues with population.. anyone wanting a good clan on US hit me up(especially new players/kelron vladseal), we have a medium sized PvP clan with 4 holdings(1 city), group every night and chill on vent :).

Start now, the wipe won't affect your characters skill at the least.

If you need help getting started, and you play on EU, send a tell to "evil grin". I'll do what I can to help, answer questions, donate a bit of items an gold.

yeah,  i played Darkfall for a couple weeks and enjoyed it, but it couldn't hold me down for a sub.

Wouldn't come back unless they did a server wipe, or made a new server, and made items/gear actually worth something.

Same as the guy above.  last news from the team I saw was that they were not sure how this would work.  I would imagine they might even launch a new server and let the old one die before pulling the plug after a few months.  All guessing at the point.

To the OP:  If you like it . . play it now. . enough will be similar that it might help you get used to how some of the game will work.    After playing for about a month I wished I had rolled a different race. so take this time to experiment.

I played it for about a month. Wonderful game. I really enjoyed it. I just didn't have the time to grind all the skills necessary, though I did enjoy being able to make my own weapons and armor and stockpile bags of equipment in preparation for the inevitable gank.

They do need to work on alignment issues, though. But who knows, I might give DF 2.0 a shot.

I would wait until 2.0 comes out.  There are too many unknowns on how they are going to handle the relaunch.  It would be a shame to grind your character just to have to start over.  Not necessarily because they wipe the servers, but they may change the skill sets

Nothing beats getting experience playing now(df has quite a learning curve), and AV has never ever said there is going to be a wipe.

basically this, the current grind is seriously hardcore, it would be soul destroying to grind up a character to a reasonable level only to find out in darkfall2.0 that you could of done it in a fraction of the time. Or to discover your build which you traiend up is gimped or not what you would have liked. Wait for 2.0 imo. Chances are 2.0 will bring many new players so you wont be as alone leveling up your skills.

I don't think it will matter much since the spec will be in the equipement you will wear, something like equiping a leather armor will boost your archery and knife skills. So basically if you already maxed those skills you will just have full access to that specialisation. Thats how i understood it, but i might be totally off, i already have been totally off for few things about this game.

  • rusmurfrusmurf Member UncommonPosts: 18

Yeah, alot of the equipment will be obsolete, but nothing beats in game playing experience.
