In GW2, NPCs are talking between themselves. Or NPCs are getting PC's attention by going to them and telling them they need help. I'm REALLY DIGGING this feature.
How is TOR making a lively world?

It'll be plenty lively when there's 50 bazillion people playing it.
And there will be.
That's really not good enough. There is a limit on how many peoples there can be per server. So at times certain areas are playerless.

"Only got to level 4 but I absolutely loved the voice over. Even the random NPCs standing around which don’t have much of a purpose are talking to each other and they have voice over too whilst they chat, continuously found my self stopping and listening to what they had to gossip about"

same feature in SWTOR.
I can feel your anger. This game is defenseless. Take your weapon. Strike this game down with all of your hatred, and your journey towards towards the Dark Side will be complete.
from the recent fansite summit:
Idle banter can be heard by NPCs throughout the game. These conversations normally pertain to local events and are regularly heard from NPCs that don't offer any other dialogue.
and
Companion characters will taunt you if they get close to death with unique lines of dialogue.

Do you know that for sure? Or are you just assuming?
Do you know what happens when you assume?
You know I'm looking forward to GW 2. I didn't care much for the first one, but this one looks really good. I like the art design of the game and so far the attacks and character animations I have seen look really nice. I think it will be a very successful game both because it will be a good game and because you only have to pay the box price and no monthly fee.
That said TOR is the mmo I am looking forward to. I don't expect it to be the second coming of Jesus, but I do think it will be a highly polished and enjoyable experience.
I really don't think TOR will have a hard time proving why it will be worth the monthly fee with the already massive amount of content it is supposed to ship with as well as content updates.
From what I have seen TOR's scale in general will be far larger than GW 2's. This is going to be a massive game.
Every quest giver, vendor, trainer, companion, story related npc and any other notable npc's in the game will be fully voiced. This is a big deal despite how many people like to brush it aside. That is a massive amount fo work.
Not only that, but they are trying to create a cinematic experience throughout the entire game which will be reflected in your personal quests, worlds quests, major group quests, raids etc..
So far I am really liking the direction of the art design and just the choices the developers are making in general.
I really believe when TOR comes out that it will not have anything to worry about from anyone else. That's a pretty bold statement, but the game is not even in beta and already is looking fantastic and with the what we know so far about the game I just don't see this game doing any less than great at release and beyond. I hope I'm right.
NPCs talking to each other didnt make WAR any better why would it make any other game better?
Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling"

I think he is speaking from common sense. No matter what MMO you have played or will play for that matter, it will have times that certain areas are playerless. No need to get defensive, he just wants to know what they plan to do to make areas alive. A game can make an area feel alive just on how they design without having players in it. I'm sure you've noticed the difference yourself in many games.

We can't assume that this game will be anything like other games, so we cannot apply the same logic here.
Unless there is no world what so ever and only has1 area then It will have areas that have no people in it once in a while. It isn't an assumption, it's just the way things are.
How can anyone answer this question unless they played the game?
Currently Playing: World of Warcraft
Pretty much the same way. NPC's talk between them while you walk in the world, there are people talking/dancing/drinking in cantinas, etc. It's a living world, if that's what you want to know! I don't know if NPC's will walk to talk to you, there aren't any reports on that, but it might be in the game in some sort of quests.
You probably have to sit there for 10 min listening to all the VO before you go on quests.
Go read the stuff from the fan summit, there are write ups on torwars, darth hater, and askajedi. In them they mention that npcs talk randomly with each other and walk around. All quest turn ins have cutscenes, and there are branching outcomes that also change what bosses are in flash points due to your dialog choices. So, yeah pretty sure it will match and beat most of the GW2 stuff in that feild.
Your being ridiculous. Not only do we not have to assume that this game will be like other games, we already know for fact this game will be "anything like other games." There is questing, leveling to cap, diddling around in end game, trinity ect. I'm pretty sure they've stated themselves that they didn't want to stray to far away from the wow model. They added their bioware story touch, little twist here and there, millions of dollars in voice over, and story focused content-and thats why people are excited. Really...what exactly is everyone expecting? The game will surely be fun and have a good story, but jeeze ppl...
I think the op's question is valid, and I'm going to guess their going to approach it in a similar manner as gw 2. Hopefully it's not just voice overs tho, because I hate to turn off music while im playing games.(hard to hear banter with loud music lol)
GW2 has dynamic events, not quests.
Even though this is basically a comparison thread "will the world of TOR be as lively as the world of GW2?", which is a bit unfair, since I doubt TOR will have random NPCs running up to players to tell alert them about raiders raiding their town. But what I would like to know is how "social" will the towns, cities & cantinas of SW:TOR will be. Will it give me enough reason to socialize in these areas (e.g. fun minigames), instead of just going there to do quests & only quests? I say this because pretty much anything, apart from questing & some gathering, can be done from your ship; so it really wouldn't matter whether the world is lively enough.
They still don't know if the minigames are going to be at launch, it's on the "wall of crazy", which means they have a huge wall with lots of features to add to the game. But unfortunatelly they have a limited budget and limited time, so they can't add them all.
To answer your question, to talk to your active companion you have to go to cantinas. So far that is one of the reasons to go there, if they introduce minigames it will be another. And theres probably more stuff they haven't talked about yet. The things you can do in your ship, you also can do in the outside, in cities, space stations, places like that.
hopefully the cantina thing will be a social gathering place.. i know im going to draw criticisms for talking about SWG.. but.. the cantina's there were fun places where players could 'mess around' a bit.. RP'ing etc.. so i would be interested to know how many can be in the cantina at the same time... without instancing that is..though im hoping that cantina's will not be instanced at all..
Yes, but Swtor's worlds will also have liveliness as in: having to watch your ass while harvesting because some ***** Jedi with too much testosteron could jump you any minute, to give an example (on pvp servers at least). And all kinds of random encounters, sometimes developing into unexpected small group skirmishes, consensual and unconsensual 1 vs. 1's, as well as large organized battles and invasions.
And duels.
GW2 sadly won't have all that in the main gameworld.
At least to me, open world pvp adds a whole lot of extra unpredictable 'liveliness' to a gameworld :-)

I don't think you will get much criticism for this desire. Heck, I was never into the whole mini-game and socializing when I tried to play SWG, but I can see how it would be a lot of fun. I personally like the idea of being able to sit down at a card table with 5 or 6 random people and playing a game or five. Even better if you can do it with some on-line friends.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
Any City of Heroes calls them missions. Seems a different name for the same thing. On top of that, the voice over actions has already been stated to be fairly brief both by the devs AND reviewers. Seriously SaintBiktor, I do not know if you are trying to Troll or are just ignorant, but only a little bit of research and you would have known this already.
Something just occured to me though. How do you know ANYTHING about how GW2 will be since it isn't even in beta yet? Kind of fishy if you ask me. At least people have had the chance to play SWTOR and the vast majority, even a lot of Star Wars / Sci Fi haters, have said it was a fun experience.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
LOL... I never seem to find a thread where you don't somehow proclaim your love for open-world PvP. Yes I already know about how much you love open-world PvP but what about those that roll on a PvE server. All they'll have is an open world full of nodes & quest hubs, so hopefully the Cantina's will provide some socialable fun for players during downtime between questing. Even LOTRO had the whole music thing, where you can just be walking in town to hand in your quest and notice people gathering around playing your memorable tunes.
Hehe, I know I am terrible. But the world pvp DOES add liveliness to a world in a sense and it LOOKS like even the pve servers will have some dedicated area's for world pvp. At least that is how I interpret this quote: "Player-vs-Player (PvP) servers have a slightly different rule set as PvE servers. On a PvP server, players may be attacked by other players from the opposing faction in more areas of the game world" <- Stressing the word "more" here, which kinda suggests that even players on pve servers will have some area's where world pvp liveliness can be experienced when their inner carebear has gone to sleep for a while and unquenchable bloodlust suddenly compels them :>
Not sure about all that though as we still know so little about rulesets and world pvp. (Like GW2's WvWvW still has a lot of questionmarks left as well).
But yeah, the cantina's should be fun and sociable. And don't forget that companions add liveliness as well: making snarky remarks at your choices, tinkering away in your player ship, etc. etc. Same with all that glorious voice over work on other npc's.
Quite a bit of liveliness I hope.
edit: on Lotro; it has indeed a lot of social benefits. Never found a more lively rp hub in a mmorpg than the Prancing Pony in Bree on an RP server. Really an amazing experience for RP fans. No world pvp in Lotro though. V_V

I wont be a critic of that, frankly I hope the Cantinas do end up as social hubs, I think it's something that been missing for awhile in games, and if they ever do get around to adding mini-games like pazaak (I honestly dont expect it for launch) then we'll have added reasons.
