“Soccer is movement with minimum contact  while the US version is a full contact sport...you know....a man's sport :P”

    Ok Dwarvy…outside :)

I think it was a fair and informative review, I am not getting my pants in a twist over how good or bad FFIV is, I really don’t care when that review comes out.

This game is not a MMO, but we need more formats for online play, the standard MMO template is too narrow. Let’s see more styles of online play please.

I was sad to read sadyx’s view of British football, football hooliganism here is in the past, it rarely flares up these days. I agree that many football players are too full of themselves but that comes with the money and fame, media ‘personalities’ are no different. It is also a fault of the media who follow there lives so closely, I don’t expect a footballer to be a saint, but the media do.

I am british and I am embarassed by the football hooliganism that our country is known for.

The fact that such a game has even leaked onto an MMO site disgusts me even more.  The anger being expressed here is nothing to do with Final fantasy being reviewed.. its the fact that a compeltly non-mmo product is being reviewed at all.

Its like buying your favorite sports car magazine only to see it full of motorcycle reviews.. now, I have no problems with motorcycles and respect their awesome power and speed, so would forgive the occasional mention but seing a f'kin football review on MMO is like seeing articles about family life and womens problems in my Sports car magazine.

mmorpg.com has been my home page for years now.  No longer!

Someone is still living in the 80's... Football hooliganism is much like all the polish migrants in the UK, i.e. a very small issue which is turned into something much bigger than it is by the UK red top rags and the Daily Fail. There is far worse violence on the continent then there is in the UK, ofc no one mentions that fact.

The vast majority of supporters and players are law abiding citizens who simply support their team like anyone who watches rugby/cricket or any other sport does.

As for this site reviewing the game, well its online and played by multiple players so I fail to see the issue, especially given some of the other games that have been reviewed.

Agree with the above poster. And also, FMLive maybe a sports title but its an MMO with traditional character progression and stat building. Just because it doesn't include goblins or spaceships doesn't mean it's an invalid choice.

Agree with Bunny and shaker. Sadeyx what friking decade are you living in m8? Also quiting this site because they reviewed a sports mmo.....Grow up! I was a beta tester for this game a few years ago and actualy had to stop testing as it was so adictive and was interfearing with my work and private life.  There was a brilliant community and atmosphere and I'm glad it is getting some attention. However I am not going to sit here and argue that it is an mmorpg but let's look at what criteria it does share with them.  Thousands of people playing together, character development and a persistant universe. To me that seems to fit the bill a lot more than some of the crap released over the last few years in the mmo market. So you don't like sports? Thats your choice but millions of people all over the world do including people who also enjoy mmorpg gameing.

    cool game bro

perfect for soccer obsessed casual computer users, just the target audience they were aiming for.

I'm not in the target audience

This game is sort of ghetto though, they could have done better, at least a virtualized lounge and player-made custom characters as they watch virtual games of soccer play out with nothing but AI in full glorious 3D.

American Football and jiu-jitsu are the most macho man sport ever... the only difference between those 2 is that the first one  you have fat men rubbing each other, moaning and jumping in piles, using very tight pants and the second one you dont have the tight pants and they are not fat men...

More personal contact then merrier they will be... because, you know, it is, a male ...kind.. sport :)

Despite the fact I can't go a day without thinking about football (soccer for the slow americans who couldn't come up with a decent name for a game where they use hands ;-) this game seriously sound ike a waste. Sadly.

If it ain't dead you're not pressing 2 hard enough.

And if we reviewed FFXIV before the reviewer had ample time to play it and experience a fair cross section of the game's content, I suppose we wouldn't get any flack for that?

We're reviewing the game, we're just taking the time to do it right.

    Hmm....

So this garbage got reviewed before FFXIV?

Who cares ? So far all reviews say that FFXIV is garbage too.

game looks "meh", nice idea but not quite 'there' yet.

i have to say when i visit america i prefer taking in a baseball game than soccer, americans just can't play football, the crowd booed when the guy crossed the ball.

"air ball" isn't soccer, the couple beside me informed me.

i just laughed, shook my head and laughed some more... "air ball".. good one.

As it seem very important for this discussion, what side of the Atlantic Ocean you reside, I better inform you all first; I’m from Denmark, but have the last seven years been a resident of the U.S.

I don’t care much for soccer or American football for that matter, since I’m more of a “Doing it guy” instead of a “Watching it” (and I can’t kick a ball or throw an American football, but kickboxing, yeah now we are talking :)), but….

    I love the Football Manager series and with that of course, I really enjoy Football Manager Online, and I think the reason for that, could make other players been interested as well, since it has nothing to do with Soccer or American football;

The game is about strategy, growing, reputation, rivalry, spotting potential in numbers and adrenalin rush as it is with many other MMORPGs.

You cannot just rely on one set strategy or think you can find the One and Only Beat them All in this game. You need multiples setup as you never know what the opponent brings. You need to be ready within a match as you do not know, if one of your players are going to be send off or injured, and one strategy could possible not fit your substitute.

The growing in this game is a bit different from many MMORPGs as there is not a maxout level (I prefer to not stay stagnant). You trying to gain promotions through seasons, moving up in a more prestige filled division, but even if you one season become the Champion, next season is right around the corner, and the battle to avoid relegation could be just a few matches away.

Reputation is like in any online game, but in this game most players would know right of the bat, who is the best, since everyone have a chance to interact with that person either through a Cup or by transactions. In the game, you truly could become a Champion not just another lvl. 80.

Rivalry, oh certainly. IMO the best pvp out there. A fight between two players is not only a few swing with a sword, but up to around 10 mins, where you have the possibility to change what seem to be a hopeless game to a victory through a few corrections in your strategy (or a bit of luck, such as getting the best player of the opponent’s team send off). And you will meet the player again and again over the length of a season. You will be able to keep an eye with that team’s success or lack of it.

It is also really satisfying to search for new players and find that they turn out to be E.G. one of the best strikers in the world. You are at all times looking for new players that fit your strategy, and it is not as easy as just searching for the next tier of equipment. Every player has a lot of different attributes. And yes, you could search for the player with the best passing skills, but you also have too mind other attributes such as Determination and Teamwork. And as no player seem to be maxed out in everything; you have to make decisions of what stats are important for your strategy. And even when you have found the best players in the world, you will have to keep their contract in order, be ready for when they are getting to old to player or have reserves when they get injured.

It is numbers in a way of how much you can afford to pay for players. Do you want a few very good players, but the rest of the squad is weak or are you going for a more mediocre squad, but you have no weak links? Should you expand the stadium, so you can increase your future income, or should you buy a player which could help you too victory?

The game is all about adrenalin rush. You are sitting at the edge of your chair in most game where you are only a goal from winning or losing. You are jumping in delight, when one of your players send the ball in the net, only to sometimes get disappointed as the goal get’s cancelled. You are kicking the cat, when the opponents are scoring the winning goal in the last minutes. And so on. This game is rather addicting for the one that seeks a little adrenalin rush, from the safety of their chair.

What I’m trying to say with way too many words is…this game does not have to be about a certain sport. You do not have to like soccer to enjoy it. This game is about so many other things, which should be very appealing to gamers.

I don’t know who won the (real) Soccer World Cup this time, but I certainly know who the Champion in this game is. I do not get up very early in the morning to watch a Manchester United game on TV, but I have manage to not be able to sleep, because I just needed to play another match in this game or find a new goalkeeper.
