I wouldn't buy a game because it has swearing or nudity.  I would buy a game that had a good art style or better immersion due to having swearing and nudity.

For example, Tabula Rasa was about soldiers at war.  Most of these people had watched everyone they know killed day in and day after and were barely scraping by.  So, the fact taht soldiers swore made perfect sense to me.   I just don't picture someone desperate and stranded on an enemy world sayin "gosh darn it" and "to heck with these foul beasts".   To me, the soldier saying: "f*ck this planet and f*ck this war and let's go kill these f**ers and piss on their corpses" is a lot more realistic.  And when a quest sent me out into the middle of a warzone to recover the colonel's porno mag, it made sense.

And the hooker in AoC that repays you with sex is a lot more realistic than the hooker you save that says "take this book, brave champion".

These games tend to revolve around killing people.  Many people.  Murdering them and taking their stuff.   These are not nice people and nice times.  So there is sex and there is blood.    I don't need it in there for shock value, I want it in there for immersion.

im sick(so sick i made this account just to fill the miss placed facts) of people saying all M rated mmos are just sex and blood no game to it. hell my favorite game was a m rated and it was APB  dispite the problems. i loved APB it was a game that could of been fixed but the company just messed things up

why was it rated m is because you had free rain on customiseing cars shirts and so forth and the avatars had a mature look to them not like other mmos and no not with outfits like lineage 2 or anything. so thats the kind of m rated mmo i like and look for. not one where they try to sell you just the sex or blood to get you in and really not much else a game with content a full game not a game with extra crap. (hope that makes sence to you all)

so don't confuse a m rated mmo to a adult one please.

ps i dont like sex, nudity and overly craped up blood in my mmos.

APB only example i know of so far that is the only mmo i know of that does not have all of that crap.

It's hard to say which I like more -

Taking a giant sword, swinging it down on top of someone's head and watching a grey splatter effect.

    or

Taking a giant sword, swinging it down on top of someones head and watching brains burst out of someones eyeballs.

Wait... no. I know what I like more. :P

No true MMOer could fit there e-peen in skull holes, that why you can't do it in Mortal O.

I've only played 1 MMO with an M rating - AoC.  Yep, it added to my experience.

If I cut someone and they bleed, it adds to the realism of it.  If I help out a hooker and she wants to reward me with the only thing she has to offer, seems perfectly realistic.  If a hardened soldier gets his leg blown off in an explosion, i expect him to say something stronger than "gosh darn it to heck!".    Yes, this is all fictional, but so are books and films.

I've never bought a game for its rating or refused to buy one for its rating.  If it's a good game and it's rated M, I like it.  If it's a crap game and rated M, i don't.  Same as a movie.  Do I like movies with graphic violence?  Sure,  Thin Red Line and Kill Bill were awesome.  But at the same time there are tons of ultra-violent "torture porn" movies that I hated.  The ratings aren't what make the game.  Violence, nudity, etc, all need to serve the overall artistic vision.

I'm all for rated M games, so long as they keep the idiot kids off the servers.  They don't have to be any different than any other game, I just want the immature morons gone.  Do what you have to do.

I would agree.  If a good MMO has realistic violence and/or sexualtiy it can add to the immersion factor.  But taking a poor gamer and just slapping blood 'n boobs on it, no thanks.

For example, I enjoyed comic Sam Kinison.  Anyone who has every heard him knows he is VERY foul mouthed.  The thing is I found a You Tube clip of him appearing on the Johnny Carson Show.  He used some of the same material I had heard in his cuss-filled stand up.  But here he never swore but was still funny.  Mature content can enhance a good game but can't save a bad one.

Well the 'M' rating on most games doesn't mean anything to me at all. Call of Duty for example. It's rated M for the realistic violence. But it's so worn out that it's not even a big deal. Most really good games coming out these days are M games. Dragon Age for example. It's rated M for violence and PG-13 sex scenes.

I wouldn't mind an MMO with more realistic gore. Not a huge ocean of blood, but the right amount something should bleed. Chopping heads off... that just adds to it. But if a developer can add in these things without making a huge deal out of it that's great. If the content is still good and playability. Same with the nudity. Sure, put some girls in a bar, just don't make a big deal out of it. Leave it as something on the side.

And that's all I got to say about that.

I agree, but as some people have pointed out, the M rating isn't keeping the kids off the servers.  Someone mentioned recently in a thread a tactic that might cut down on the kid population, and that's making more complex, difficult games.

Since the little bastards have better reflexes than us old folks, I'm thinking this can't involve merely adding difficult FPS elements.

Maybe that poster was really on to something, though.  A difficult game requiring patience, foresight, and critical reasoning skills might not keep all the kids out, but it would raise the overall IQ of the playerbase, and I'd rather play in a game of mostly intelligent adults with a sprinkling of very bright teenagers than play with a horde of stupid, twitchy frat boys.

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

    I'd play that game, and I'm 14
