Okay, I'll give you a great example of this past week.

Vikin expected a max of 20 people to join the guild.

We now have over 150 people, all of those are subbed, we even have some who are trial members, sitting in our MMORPG chat channel.

I'd say thats a good number of returning subscribers. :P

Not to be contrary but I would place the actual members at about 120-125. Maybe even 130. There are several people who have several alts. I know i have one alt that stays on the island.

Still good but I think it's important to acknowledge the alts.

Having said that, we "accept alts" because we would like our members to always be in touch with one another if needed.

But it's true that we seem to accept more people each day.

I still remain unimpressed. It could easily just be the playerbase with their main's in other guilds with just one alt tagged to the guild in a sad attempt to pull whatever subs in that they can.

From what I've gathered they are either new players or returning players. Most of the players seem to be coming in from this site.

But we'll see what happens in a month or two.

Ok, just to add some fun to the my whole conspiracy I went back to vg players and randomely checked 20 players and every single one of them had their alt section set to private so no one could check on it. I highly doubt a bunch of newbies would go to this trouble. But then I was like hey, maybe vg players is bugged cause you never know with vanguard. So I checked Joodah a very well known player on Seradon and what do you know....let me check his alts with zero problem. Viral marketing at its best image

tbf I genuinely am a returning player (from about a year ago) that purely resubbed  due to the mmorpg guild, I always like the game but found getting groups a pain. I just checked the vgplayers site (didn't even know that existed, quite handy that) and it has my alt status set to 'access denied', but I have no idea why that is I'm more than happy for others to see my chars but don't know how to change that setting, not even aware there is such a setting.

However I'm not saying it's not possible for a number of the members to be as you have said, who knows tbh, but from talking in guild chat it's pretty obvious most are new subbs (waiting for TOR or FFIX) or old players giving it another shot. On the whole guild chat isn't over fanboi at all in fact there is a fair and balanced view with ppl noting and sharing their experience and shortcomings of the game.

it really is a good game and i dont want to discourage anyone.

i'm one of those folk who simply won't play anything from SoE anymore, but if i did, it would sure as hell be VG.

I hope everyone has fun tho :]

Honestly, I didnt think he was trolling.

His concerns, wether he means them to be or not, could to some be genuine. Also there is a tendancy for people to gloss over things and I would fear people could see the posts for what I consider to be a great idea, the new mmorpg guild, a bit rose tinted. I would hate for people to have judged the game as not being for them but then seen all these extremely possitive posts, sub up, join the guild and then hate the game for the qualities they felt orriginally meant it wasn't for them. The game hasn't changed a hell of a lot it's just been tidied and had some simplification and made a hell of a lot more stable.

The game has it's faults and in my heart of hearts I don't see SOE addressing them, but if you are the type of player that doesn't expect 100% polish in every single area of a gameplay or a returning player that stopped just because they didn't have a cool group of peeps to play with then it's a superb starting point imo.

I WAS a returning player but the game has one major issue still.

    Getting ingame.

I played the trial just to check things out, played for 12 days infact getting 5 toons to 10,one to 10 in all spheres, and the rest about half-way through other 2 spheres(5ish in crafting/diplo).

I decided I'd resub my old account, to no avail.

I keep getting a error message with station launcher, which supports only asmwer was to give me a link to the Vanguard installer.

So I removed everything from HD,including station laucnher, and tried with VG launcher/updater. Went great til end where I am stuck on 1 file although it says DL is complete but have no "play" option.

I've tried everything on Tech forums, including advice from alot of players, and still nothing.

This whole time Phone/E-mail support has been silent(5 days now) with nothing more than "tried the VG launcher?".

Hehe I'm not the only one, the top 4 or so posts on the front page of support are people with same issues, with no help from Tech Support.

This is the 7th time i have tried vanguard, I started in Beta and it was a slide show as were the next couple of years, about the 4th time i tried i noticed an improvement in performance but of course no one was playing and vanguard is more group oriented then lets say Lotro.  Now i have joined the guild After Hours and the game is alot  of fun, so far people seem friendly and usually a big help since i am mmorpg challenged,( i usually push the attack button when i meant to push heal that type of thing) Its funny because I have never been a guild person befor but i got excited when i read about After Hours on this site,  goodbye Eve!

    nah.

I jus checked and it seems I have my alt section set to "access denied". I didn't even know there was an alt section let alone being able to set it to private.

I have one alt in the group as I already mentioned.

So I have no idea as to the reason this is set to private.

edit: if anything, this is how conspiracy theories start. Stupid stuff like this.

As soon as I figure out how to set it to public I'd be happy to.

If you look up AFter Hours you see:

I did not mean to imply that we had 150+ actual ACCOUNT's, which is why I said the word people. But technically I suppose the words CHARACTER's probably would have been a better choice in hindsight.

But yes, we have a handful of alts, and the rest are all subbing players, and I have to say, its a huge turn out. :D

I've been in the new guild for a week now and I do agree that some of the posts regarding it are a bit rose tinted at least as far as my personal experience has been concerned. Firstly I have not met any bad players and I wish everyone the absolute best of luck and success in the game but I've encountered some things that have basically turned me off from the whole idea.

firstly out of those 100+ people there has never been more then around 20 actually logged on at the times when I can play which is primarily us est time 8-11 weekenights and saturday afternoon's and evenings. This afternoon for instance I've played around 3 hours end there is like 12 people on scattered all over the place and most seem from Europe. This is all fine but it looks again like once your out on the mainland you'll be alone unless you can tag along when they are running a guild group which is what they are working on for weeknights now but if most are not in my timezone I'll be going solo again which in this game is not much of any option once you get into the 20's

Just around everyone I've encountered from the guild either is already playing the game and looking to get their characters transferred to the server or returning players who already have mid to high level characters. I have encountered basically no "noobs" I'm not saying the guild doesn't have them but those are not who have been on when I have been playing. Again this is no problem but the guild is not a "noob" guild unless you consider people running mid  level content "noobs"

So since I only have like 10-15 hours a week on average to devote to mmo's and this game becomes an old school grouping game the higher you get in it I'm pretty sure I'll be left way behind on the leveling curve for the active players and then have to rely on the charity of strangers to mentor down to me so I could get anywhere. It's just the game mechanics themselves. In other mmo's I can solo and make progress on my own and rely on guildies when I either get stuck on a quest or want to run a dungeon but at least I can do "something" on my own since I don't have a lot of time to play. So I think it becomes more of the game not being compatible with my personal playstyle then anything wrong with it or the guild for that matter.

I would agree with some other posters though and say I wouldn't read a whole lot into this mini resurgance of interest in vanguard.  There's been a few new articles posted about the game and right now there are a lot of gamers out there waiting on the "next big thing" so probably some of the former 150k players may be looking to see what's going on with game and the new guild has just been in the right place at the right time to scoop some of them up at least for the short term. I could totally be wrong and I got not problem with that I would very much like to see vg stick around for a long time regardless of if I play it or not. I wish all the smaller "niche" mmos success to keep the market fresh and give alternatives to a lot of the absolute garbage that's out there now.

I have played VG twice once about 2 years ago and again about 6ish months ago. There was actually a MMORPG.com revival group (The Path Ahead) which had chosen VG as a game of choice. I can say in both time my expierence in VG with others has been great for about a month but then folks just start dissappearing or loosing interest. Then that solo bite starts to sink in and my interest level drops.  Contrary to what the above poster said leveling is quite doable (with perhaphs a few select classes) up until aorund level 48 or so (not sure exactly as 45 was my highest).  Sure there is some very nice gear to get from grouped quests along the way but really you can level without it. VG does hacve a lot of fun to offer but I am still suspicious about the end game. I can no longer run raidwork like I did back 12 years ago in EQ1.. I have a job, kids and a wife now.

So I find myself in the place as a lot of folks do with my expierence (A niche of 30-40 something gamers). Missing that old school, open-world feeling. The joy of leveling up slowly, getting into trouble and making new friends along the way but without any of the time to commit to a full-time MMORPG habit. Last I checked the forums (albeit 6ish months ago) a lot of the more casual guild in VG were complaining about loosing all new players to the hard core raid endgame. Still VG offers a nice bit of depth in PVE, Crafting and Diplomacy and I feel tempted to return. I'll be interested to see how the game changes over the next few months with regards to folks coming in and actually staying. Oh well a bit of a rambly post but I had a dream about VG last nite for some odd reason...

This year the devs added Magi Hold Chapter 1, 2 and 3 which is solo/small group/group/raid content.  They also added Shadow Hilsbury which is solo/small group/group/12 man content.  Shimmer shallows and Sea of Kojan is also solo/group content.  All this is level 50+ content.

I suspect this is one factor causing many of my in game friends to return.  Its surprising but we're turning away new apps b/c we have more than we need.  Our guild is full and its cascading down to the other guilds.  Lot of new people and returning people in game.
